Need Help Satisfying the H/SS Requirement Please (College of Engineering)

I need a little help satisfying the college of engineering H/SS requirement. This is what the paper I got in the mail says about the requirement:

The problem is that most of my H/SS courses are upper division. How do you gain upper division standing to take the upper division courses to satisfy H/SS? Should you re-plan your H/SS courses if 3 of the 6 are upper division? Nearly all of the classes that actually interest me in the H/SS requirement are upper division courses. Also, nearly all of these courses are on the list that says “Courses on this list are only valid if taken during the 2007-2008 Academic Year.” If I can’t take Upper Division courses during my 2007-2008 year, then I can’t use any of these courses [If so, what’s the point of putting upper division courses on this list of courses that can only be taken your 1st year? Isn’t it like less than 1% of students that come in with Upper Division standing in their first year?]?

Here are the courses I’m looking at (* = Only valid for 2007-2008 year, according to the purple paper I got in the mail):

4 on AP US History Exam = 1 Lower Division H&SS course

EARTH AND PLANETARY SCIENCE 170AC* [Also satisfies Cultures requirement]

Ethics and the Impact of Technology on Society – Engineering 124*

Science, Technology, and Culture – Engineering 195*

English R1A*

English R1B*

Would this work?
Condition 1: Satisfied [6 courses]
Condition 2: Satisfied [3 upper division courses]
Condition 3: ??? [Does taking Engineering 124 and 195 count satisfy the condition?]
Condition 4: Satisfied [Taking English R1A and R1B]
Condition 5: Satisfied [Earth and Planetary Science 170AC satisfies this]
Condition 6: Satisfied [Only using 4 on AP US History Exam]

It looks fine on paper, but will it actually work? The problem is that the purple paper says that the asterisked courses are only valid for the 2007-2008 academic year, and these courses are upper division courses. So, does that mean I will have to find other courses instead of these to use (I know that you’re not supposed to satisfy your whole H/SS requirement in 1 year, but the courses that interest me are apparently only valid for 1 year)? I think I’ll only have room for 2 courses my Freshman year as this is what I’m planning on taking:

CS61A - CS61B
Math 1B - Math 53
Physics 7A - Physics 7B
English R1A - English R1B

If it helps, here’s my AP Credit (I only got a 3 on the AP English Language Exam):
Biology: Biology 1A + 1B
Math: Math 1A
US History: 1 lower division H/SS course

Hm not sure if series requirement could be both upper division.

If you're gonna take English R1A, I'd recommend taking English 135AC. It satisfies upper division, AC, R1B, and series requirement.
Then your list would look like:
1. AP US History
2. English R1A
3. English 135AC

Then the other three, you can take whatever class for fun, as long as you include 1 upper division class. Take classes you're genuinely interested in, not necessarily engin 124 and 195 (engineering classes usually aren't much fun). Most humanities classes are much easier than the engineering classes anyways. Take psych or philosophy or something. I took econ and I found it really interesting and easy.

yes, two UD humanities can count as series

What does upper division standing mean? What do you need to be or do to get it?

^ ditto
i'm interested in taking some psych classes, like psych 163. is that upper division? does that mean i have to take a lower division class like psych 1 before i take that class?

Everything that has 100 or above in the course number is upper division. You need a certain amount of credits to have upper division standing. I'm not sure how many credits that is, but I believe most people have upper division standing by their junior year. I believe next to nobody has upper division standing when they enter, unless of course they got a BUNCH of AP/IB credit.

not sure of the overall statistical data, but from personal experience with fellow freshmen engineers this year, i've encountered quite a few people who entered with sophomore standing, less with junior standing, and a couple with senior standing. i believe the cutoff is 30 units, but i might be wrong about that. (ie. 0-30=freshman, 30-60=soph, etc.)
also, they do count credit from community colleges, provided that the courses are transferrable in credit via assist.org
