Need help selecting major...

I am planning to apply to UCLA in November as a transfer student, but I am having a difficult time selecting a major. I am torn between American Lit/Culture, Comp Lit, Linguistics and English, and English. Obviously my area of interest is reading/writing. I actually want to pursue a major that requires an obscene amount of writing because my ultimate goal is to go to law school.

Hopefully I can get feedback from someone who is majoring in one of these areas. Can you tell me about the major? Which one would I have the best chance of getting into? My GPA is a disappointing 3.75. Any advice appreciated.

Major makes absolutely no difference on admission.

It depends on each individual school. In this case, you’re applying to College of Letters and Science, and so your major is not considered in your review process.
But for other schools (School of Engineering, School of Nursing, School of the Arts and Architecture, etc…), major is considered in the admission review process.

“that requires an obscene amount of writing”

You sure are unusual! In a good way. ;)

I’m an English major. So far no upper-division classes, but I’m taking one this quarter. Usually 3 essays per quarter (10 weeks), plus partially essay-based midterms/finals. I think you’lll write about the same in each of those majors, since they’re all in the English field and literature-based.

What do all of you folks want to do with English?

If female: marry rich lawyers and make babies.

If male: get high and/or stoned at every party

Oops, sorry.

I think English is a great stepping stone for success in law school. If that doesn’t work out, the skills developed by English majors are always in high demand by a broad range of industries. Exceptional writing, communication, and critical thinking skills can be applied just about anywhere.

Linguistics and English sounds really interesting, but ultimately, it’s entirely up to you.

And, as others have said, if applying to CLS, major is not considered during admissions, so you’ll have some time to decide even after you get in.

I want to teach. I know, I know, so clich

I think you should choose the major that you have completed the most pre-reqs for. That way, you can start on your upper divs when you get to UCLA.
