Hey guys, I'm wondering if you could help me out here.

I am about to complete my second semester in community college, and I'm contemplating what I'd like to major in. I'd like to get transfer to Berkeley, or any other school if I'm not able to get in.

My initial choice was Political Science. I have some (shaky) networking established, so I might be able to get a job after I graduate. Also, I'm possibly considering applying to law schools because I'm interested in becoming a lawyer. I think a B.S in Political Science is pretty flexible (to my knowledge), so I'd be able to apply for different kinds of jobs within state or federal government, regardless of whether I get them or not. Unfortunately, political science isn't really necessarily my strong suit. I don't find it as interesting as I imagined it would be, and I have a hard time imagining myself writing upper-division papers for Political Science at a university like Berkeley, or any other UC for that matter. I'd be doing it solely for the name on the degree. And by the way, I suck at the math and sciences, so there's another reason why it's my initial choice.

However, right now I'm contemplating whether or not I want to try and apply as a Social Welfare major at Berkeley. I come from a low income background, so social work is really something I'm interested in. I feel as if I would actually enjoy studying in that department. However, becoming a social worker does not come with the greatest salary (#1 worst paying degree on average, according to the latest Yahoo! News article). I would still apply to law school if I obtained a B.A in Social Welfare, but if I don't get in, I feel as if the degree isn't as flexible as one in PoliSci. I could apply to the graduate program at Berkeley, but that will be just as difficult as applying to law school.

So basically, I think that Political Science will offer me more opportunities in the future, but I will not enjoy studying it during my two years at a UC, and this is ultimately result in a lower GPA. However, I would enjoy studying Social Welfare, but in the end, I might not have a high paying job, and remain part of a low income family with a lot of debt from school.

Thoughts?
