Need Help--Song Choices

Hello. I've been looking into songs to do for my college auditions and for one of my songs, I was thinking of doing Inútil from In The Heights. Now the problem with this is that In The Heights is still very popular right now--still on Broadway, and the song's sung by Kevin, who's a grown father. That's much beyond my age range (high school senior). What do you all think?

I'm a male, my range is in essence a baritenor.

It’s best to sing a song from a show not currently on Broadway and one that is sung by a character close to your own age.

Agree with SRW look for songs sung by characters close to your own age, and it is best to stay away from shows currently running on Broadway. You may also want to find at least one song from a golden age musical, or earlier. Good luck!

Don’t sing any song from In the Heights.

Okay, I won’t. I didn’t think it would work. What about a piece from Cabaret? Wouldn’t the MC be closer to my age (high school senior)?

Like what?

I don’t think the MC songs from Cabaret are the greatest choice for a college audition.

I don’t know enough about you. But to give you some examples as a starting point…

Traditional Ballad:
Hey There from The Pajama Game…1954

Traditional Uptempo:
Once In Love With Amy from Where’s Charley…1948

Contemporary Ballad:
I’d Rather Be Sailing from A New Brain

Contemporary Uptempo:
Let It Sing from Violet (may be more Tenor)

I agree with SoozieVT – those are good song choices. And regarding the Cabaret songs – most schools prefer that you stay away from accents in your audition.

Alright, I’ve strayed away from those previous choices. I’m considering some songs from Pippin. But I’m wondering: is Schwartz’s music okay for playing by an accompanist?

Generally speaking, his songs are not that difficult – it just depends on which song you’re talking about. Corner of the Sky is very overdone – but there are lots of other good songs in Pippin.

Well I was looking at Simple Joys, Extraordinary, Magic to Do, With You, and the Finale, and the piano parts all seemed very complex. I hear I shouldn’t choose something to hard for the accompanist, but I suppose I don’t know what constitutes as too difficult.

mattbhill…I imagine as part of your audition prep, you are rehearsing with a pianist or voice teacher who accompanies you on piano, right? Ask that person how difficult the song is to sight read. If you are not a pianist, it might be hard for you to tell on your own.

Are you working with the vocal selections, or the actual score?

I’m not the best pianist but I am one to some extent. I’ll ask teachers their opinions. I’m working with the vocal selections, that have the vocal parts and pianist parts.

The music in the vocal selections book is quite easy and shouldn’t be a problem. The score is a bit more difficult but not too bad for a good pianist.
