I received my FA package from FSU back in March and I got a scholarship for National Achievement finalist of $24k. The total package is about $18k per year. I was already liking the feel of FSU over UF wayyy more. I got the admission deposit waived and I already paid the $200 housing deposit.

But I just got this from UF: http://i43.tinypic.com/5e8viq.jpg

and that's not even including about $1890 per semester from Bright Futures and the $22k over 4 years(2750 per semester) from UF for being a National Achievement Finalist (I made merit too, but they don't even get 1/10th of what Achievement finalists do for some reason.. which is racist and needs to be adjusted imho.) But although I got the admission deposit waived here as well, I haven't applied for housing (my scholarship package says Hume is guaranteed if I want it, but I don't want to be around nerdy people 24/7) or anything.

What do I do? .__.

My major will be somewhere in business or IT btw..

My son was in Hume as a freshman. Hume isn’t full of nerdy people. It’s full of smart people. It’s not the party dorm that some of the others are, but it’s not buttoned up, either. Besides, you’ll most likely move off campus after freshman year anyway.

That aside, you got a great package from UF. What was it about FSU that you liked so much more? They’re both great schools, but UF has the better reputation and Gainesville is a lot better college town than Tallahassee. You’ll have to weigh the “feel” of both schools against your financial situation. If you can afford to give up that extra UF money and you prefer FSU, you should follow your gut. But if money is a consideration, you’d be nuts to turn down UF’s package in my opinion.

Take the package from FSU over UF. While UF is a fine school, FSU has unique opportunities to present to motivated students and in an excellent location that is much more than a town surrounding a university. FSU is a university in the state capital, with an excellent College of Business: [FSU Highlights](<a href=“Rankings | Florida State University”>Rankings | Florida State University)

Go 'Noles!!

Oh yes, regarding “reputation” I am an FSU grad and have worked with a national concern for 27 years. Folks outside Florida confuse FSU and UF all the time. I have to correct them when they ask about the FSU “Gators”.

Well that didn’t help me make a decision >_<

Can someone else (preferably someone with no personal investments in either school) make a recommendation?

Oh and what I liked about FSU was:

the dorms were much nicer
campus was prettier and more inviting
students and faculty alike were REALLY nice and helped me get around when I looked lost
classrooms looked nicer imo, rather than the old crammed up desks and minimal aisle space at UF
the girls were wayyyyyy hotter… >_>
I felt like more of a random number at UF, but got the opposite feeling from FSU
At UF, people seemed unnecessarily condescending about FSU when I mentioned it was the other school I was considering. At FSU, I was just told to go where I was most comfortable…

They’re jealous. Can you blame them? :)

Good luck with your search. If you have more questions try the FSU forum on CC (under “colleges”)

I was considering FSU too (I’m decided on Rochester now) but I got that same feeling of nice people. I was accepted into the honors program and I don’t know if you are but the dorms and the people are really really nice. the events are amazing, the people are friendly and the campus itself is great. i really liked it so I would go for FSU. academically they seem to be the same because I never hear anything about UF’s business program being superior in any way to FSU’s. You’re not choosing between Harvard and a rank 50 school, and as much as UF and FSU fans want to make it seem like this decision is a tough one, for someone outside of our state, and even in, it doesn’t make a difference as long as you do well in whichever school you attend.

I am a native Floridian-grew up in a “Gator” immersed home, but loved the campus and feel of FSU in the 70’s when I was applying to schools. I spent the first 2 years of my professional nursing career at the teaching hospital at UF. Both schools are good-each has a distinctive feel. I did some research to look at the ratings of the two schools relative to your intended major. While UF is #40 and FSU #72-I agree with a prior poster that people outside of the region generally blur the distinctions between the two schools.

As a parent of two kids who are at a school they like, but one of whom wishes they had probably chosen differently, I would offer the following advice: if all things were equal, where would you feel the most at home and comfortable? To me, that sense of calmness and security within yourself makes the transition to college ( and therefore to academic success) far easier. The other thing to remember ( if the FA difference is NOT CRITICAL to you) is your own comfort level with a school will also determine what type of overall college experience you have. Your major will be demanding, but it is important to have time to enjoy all of the “college experience”- not just the classroom. Good luck in whatever decision you reach.

Well I had a 3.97 GPA (one semester B last year) and 2280 SAT score, but if I went to one school and tried to switch to the other later, those things wouldn’t mean anything as far as aid would they?

No, big merit aid is generally awarded only to incoming freshmen, so it’s best to make a firm decision now and not go in with transfer hopes if you need that aid to attend. They may have some type of transfer scholarships, but not likely to compare to your current offers.

meh… I wish my parents were able to consult me on this. Of course they’re just going to say “Go where you get more monies!” and that’s it.

Why don’t you give us some more detailed info on the money –

After the free money (not any loans) how much will each school cost? Include the total cost of attendance – transportation, books, personal expenses, etc.

Also – does either school offer you any special programs? free study abroad, special small honors classes, internships, etc.

That info will help us make a good recommendation.

Sorry for not making it clear, but that money completely covers the COA and leaves me with well over $10k per year to come to my bank account.

Both honors programs have good study abroad programs (I’m not really interested in them) and small grants, but that’s about it…
I know a lot more bout FSU honors than UF honors since I originally wasn’t considering UF at all and only wanted to apply so I’d have proof of not being one of the UF rejects…
