Hi. I am in an interesting position. I am a sophomore and with coronavirus, I have a big decision to make. I currently go to a T20 school, but am not happy. I chose prestige over happiness and fit. Here are my options:
UF: I’m not from the state of Florida, but it is still a good deal for OOS kids for tuition. I do not know anyone there and would have to start over basically for two years.
UMiami: know some HS friends there and got accepted as a transfer student. Not as highly ranked as I would like, but would be willing to sacrifice a little prestige to be happy.
Vanderbilt: haven’t gotten in yet, but spoke with someone on the phone and they said they believed they good news coming for me.
Boston College: closer to home (from Northeast), know some people there and it’s a solid option.
What would you choose to do if you were me knowing that graduate school is also in the future.
Thanks CC!
What is your major? Why is grad school in your future?
How did all of these places end up on your list?
What exactly is it that you don’t like about your T20, and what do you hope to find at the place you transfer to?
Do you have estimates yet from each of these as to how many of your credits will transfer?
This is the second time you transferred. What exactly is the problem with this second school and are you in any way sure that your third school won’t have the same problems for you?
@TomSrOfBoston thanks for your response. That is correct. It isn’t necessarily a problem with the current school, and I do understand and appreciate your opinion on going to a third school. The issue I have is the T20 is not transfer friendly and it was really hard breaking into friend groups as there is an intense community aspect there. It also has terrible weather and location, and I just am not happy there. I actually sort of dread returning there in the fall. So, it is more about being in a better location.
@happymomof1 thank you for your response! I appreciate it. So, I tried to find schools that directly correct one of the main issues I currently have (weather) and found schools that were also sort of similar in rank. Vanderbilt is a great school, good location and medium sized. BC similar with a little less emphasis on great weather, and UF and UMiami are both good schools with great weather. That’s sort of where I came out on the choices. Costs aren’t that different at any of the schools except UF because it is a state school and even out of state is significantly cheaper than any of the private schools. Thanks
