gpa:school doesnt calculate, but i have straight As

sat IIs: to be taken
rank: again school doesnt rank but probably top 3 out of 100

ECs - strong but i guess just as strong as the others, quite a few leadership positions , debating club, part of student group in charge of prefects,a sport for 4 years, etc etc

very strong academically (esp at math), good at writing i.e. essays will be very good

i am international student (canadian) who needs for financial aid, and am interested in both economics and engineering

Heres my list:

UPenn (wharton)
Dartmouth
Columbia
Cornell
Johns Hopkins
Middlebury

well, looking at that list im thinking that it might be a bit too reach heavy?
would johns hopkins and middlebury be classed as matches
im finding it hard to find safties as i need ones that would give aid to a canadian............

The only b-school on your list is Wharton, and that is vastly different from every other school on the list! This makes no sense. You should either apply to b-schools or apply to Penn’s College instead–which would be a better fit for someone who is also applying to Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia, etc…

yeah i ive already considered what youre saying since i like aspects of both business and economics (more so economics)
and ive decided that if i get into wharton i will do business with an emphasis on economic-style courses or electives, i also like their more hands of education and the fact that i can double major with engineering
so that wud explain why its on the list…
oh yes and im applying there ED

any other thoughts on my list? i would like to know whether you think middlebury and JHU class as matches

I really disagree with bagels. There’s no reason Wharton should not be on the list as it indeed has similarities with the others. Business there or econ at the others is not radically different. My son is at Dartmouth but Wharton was a strong second and we found the social scenes similar. The anomaly on the list to me is Columbia which is radically different lifestyle wise.

Given what we saw last year in the application process, many kids with your stats amazingly didn’t get into anything but their safeties so I believe safeties are very important at this point in time. I would add CMU which is strong in both of your areas, Smith if you’re female and Michigan.

Are you sure about CMU? We have a brilliant young Indian recent hire from there and I’m certain he is not from wealth. I’m not in the office today but will ask next week. Merit scholarship maybe?

“If you are an international student who plans to enroll at the university, you and your family must assume the total cost of a Carnegie Mellon education. Financial aid is not available to undergraduate international students. Undergraduate international students are also not eligible to participate in monthly payment plans”

^ aaah, thts from their site and all the scholarships state taht you need to be a US citizen, and anyone i wudnt really regard CMU as a safety, maybe a low match but not somewhere there is no doubt that i would get into
