pg 661 q 30
The best way to describe the relationship of sentence 2 to sentence 1 is that sentence 2
a. anticipates a reader’s possible response to sentence 1
b. provides historical background for sentence 1
c. repeats the idea presented in sentence 1
d. introduces a contrasting view of sentence 1
e. corrects an inaccuracy stated in sentence 1
the answer is A but I don’t get the reason why.
I selected B and E secondly. Please help me.
So sentence 1 makes a statement. Sentence 2 then responds “No …”, so it anticipates a possible response. Think as if the reader and author were having a conversation.
Author: “This summer…”
Possible reader response: “But there were no microphones back then!”
Author: “No, there were no microphones…”
Hope this helps!
this is quite complicated for me to understand, I thought b is correct for sure, because b shows that there was no microphone in the past…
It’s true that it does provide historical background when it says “there were no microphones in those days”. The thing that makes the correct answer choice A is that “no” at the beginning of the sentence.
If that wasn’t there you’d be absolutely correct, but that one word makes it a response to a hypothetical statement.
