my friend is technically a sophomore education major at OSU but due to his advisor not really understanding the system at OSU and let him take classes that didnt really count toward his major and his financial aid being screwed up freshmen year, he found out recently that he basically only have credit for one class that counts toward his major, essentially saying that he's wasted 2 years of college taking classes that didnt count toward anything.

He's trying to major in Secondary education (high school) but cant find anything on the OSU website about it, which is rather odd. Are the classes the same for that and Early/Middle childhood education? and what would you suggest he do in this case?

That could be because Ohio State doesn’t have a “general purpose” secondary education major. But how could he have wasted two years? Surely he was taking courses that met the Skills, Breadth, Historical Study, etc. requirements?

I’m not sure exactly how it works at OSU (and in Ohio), but generally people planning to become high school teachers major in whatever field they plan to teach (i.e. Chemistry, French, etc.) and then enroll in an MEd. program where they pick up the basic teaching skills and meet the state’s licensure requirements. Sometimes (as here at Penn) they have a deal where you overlap the MEd program with your senior year for five years total rather than 4+2.

What your friend needs to do is get over to the Undergraduate Student Services office in Campbell Hall and get himself a better advisor. He’ll need to be patient - chances are he’ll end up telling the story to two or three different people before he finds the exact office or advisor he needs. Definitely do not rely on the website, emails, or the like - this is one of those things that needs to be worked out in person.

well he kinda did waste two years since all he pretty much took was freshman english and a couple art classes and some phys ed courses.

He was under the impression that since OSU had an Early/Middle Childhood Pre-education major that it was pretty much the same for high school. guess thats not true.
