Hey guys, so I just submitted my FAFSA and I used the IRS transfer tool so they transferred the information from my taxes filed in 2016 but I was wondering why they didn’t ask if I was currently employed or anything because I’m not longer working and I’m afraid FAFSA will assume I still have that job and it’d affect my financial aid.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Thank you.
This 2018-2019 FAFSA uses your income from 2016.
Are you the student or the parent?
If you are the student…how much income did you earn in 2016?
I’m the student, it said I was an independent student etc etc
I earned around 8k for around 5 months, but I lost that job June of 2017 so I’m worried FAFSA might still think I’m still working there.
Are you an independent student? Are you over 24 years of age? Are you married? Are you a veteran? Are you an orphan? Were you in guardianship at some point?
Or did you answer something wrong on your FAFSA?
The 2018-2019 FAFSA uses income from 2016. If you no longer will have that income, you need to contact the financial aid office at your school…and see what they say in terms of perhaps using professional judgement.
Will you be working this year?
FAFSA is just an application. It is collecting information so it doesn’t ‘think’ you are still employed at all.
FAFSA collects tax info from the prior year, current asset information, and calculates the EFC. If you are currently making more, that will show up in the 2019 FAFSA you file next fall (using 2017 tax numbers).
If when you start school next Fall your financial situation is much different (job loss) you can appeal to the school.
I am 23 and have a daughter so maybe that’s why, I’m not sure. I lost my job in June and decided I’d like to try and go back to school, I think I will contact the financial aid office and let them know. Thank you for the advice, and I was planning to just go back to school and maybe find a part-time job
Yes…do contact the college.
Is this a four year college…or is it a community college. Do you have a place to live that is no cost?
Perhaps you can work part time…and take classes part time.
You lost your job in the summer. How. Are you supporting yourself and your child? How is rent paid? How is food paid?
