I'm a jr. in highschool, in advanced placement classes. I plan on majoring in software development and AI. I know spanish, english, and some german, and am an american citizen. I was wondering how i could go to college in Europe (citizenship, student visas, ect..), how much THAT would cost, what colleges i should look at, and how much THAT will cost.

In order to attend college in Europe, you’d have to be able to pay the full cost of tuition, plus all your living expenses, yourself. In order to get a student visa, you’d have to prove that you have enough money to pay all of those expenses (PLUS your return airfare!) BEFORE you’d get the visa. In other words, all the money has to be sitting in a bank account and available to you. I’m guessing you could do this one year at a time, but I’m not certain.

You could not plan on working while in Europe because (1) you wouldn’t legally be permitted to work and (2) as I already said, you have to have the money to pay all your expenses before you go.

What I can’t fathom is what advantage there’d be - if your career goals are software development and AI - to studying in Europe. Unless you’re focusing on something highly specialized that’s currently only being researched in Europe, I can’t see any advantage at all. And, clearly, that’s not the case - because you don’t seem to care which school you attend, so long as it’s European.

If you want to go to school in Europe, get yourself admitted to an American college with a good study abroad program. That way, you can get your degree and have the chance to attend school in Europe for a year.

If you know the specific country that you are interested in, contact the Education Officer at that country’s closest Consulate in the US. That person can help you find out what you need to know about higher education in his or her country.

Does your guidance counselor have any resources for you? I know I have seen representatives from European universities at college fairs I have attended. Have you tried that?

There must be a good comprehensive website for this or a good college guide? Also, search for other threads in CC, I know there are some already.

I think it sounds like a great opportunity, so continue to do research into the possibilities until you know enough to decide if this is right for you. There are probably many universities where you can get a good program in CS, probably fewer where you could specialize in AI. If so, you could save AI for graduate level studies back home.
