I am very worried over how housing works. My deposit was put in late. I know I should be looking at off campus options. But I want to be a part of the college social life, and I am afraid that offcampus, I won't be a part of anything. Plus, I am not a partier at all. Will I fit in? I am social and like to be social, I just don't have interest in drinking and such.

Yes you will fit in. There is room for all freshmen on campus I believe. Male or female? There is an all girl dorm, and I think there are other all girl non sorority living options. (What is it called? Scottish Rites House or something like that?) The big dorms like Jester do have mixers and they don’t involve alcohol.

I am no expert, but there are some interesting on campus housing options. Jester, as mentioned, is a huge dorm, and has a reputation for being quite lively. Duren is newer and smaller, if not small. It is located near the science and engineering part of campus. San Jac is also big and very desirable, but more of a jock dorm now. Whitis is a small, coop type living arrangement. If you want to make a tight group of friends, this may be your best option. There is an Honors Quad. I am sure you can find partiers and nonparties at all these locations.

Then there are some hybrid living arrangements (I think of them that way) like Dobie. It isn’t really on campus, but is so close it may as well be. The living space is more apartment like than dorm like. You may not have an RA to help you meet people, but i do think these living arrangements have mixers and parties.

Like I say I am not the most knowledgeable, but I have the impression that future Greeks live off campus in a particular area. These apartments are more true off campus apartments, but also aren’t that far away.

@Lizardly Do you have any information on Kinsolving and Littlefield? I’m an engineering major and was wondering how quick these dorms fill up; if I’d have a chance

If you qualify for honors, you usually can get a spot in the honors dorms without a problem (Littlefield).

I don’t know. I will ask around and see. I suspect they don’t fill too quickly. The location would be good for an engineering major. Kinsolving also has a cafeteria, and is close to the drag if you have trouble making meal times. Not to mention that there is a small army of people available to help you move in, something I didn’t see at the other dorms.

Still don’t know how quickly they fill. To my surprise, I heard many Kinsolving girls stay on. It is popular for girl engineers. They even have some tutoring there. I would think there are spots saved for freshman, though.

@Lizardly So there are a lot of upperclassmen women engineer majors there then? hmmm… Yes, I really hope I get Kinsolving, I put in my housing deposit ($50) about a week or two after the Dec. 1 deadline and just paid my housing contract last week, so I don’t know how that affects my chances if I’m either early or late. Thanks for the info though, if you have any updates on Kinsolving let me know!

So Whitis court or Kinsolving sounds good for me? I am female. Would I even have a chance for either one, with such a late sign up date?

@undecided2014 did you apply on the housing preference to be put in the ‘WEP’ program/engineering for women? If not, I think it might be difficult to get in Kinsolving since the the applying process was open during August. I’ve no idea about Whitis there is never a 100% guarantee you won’t get in though, so let us hope for the best

Good luck to you both. I would think places are saved for freshman, and I would think, too, that not that many girls would choose a single sex dorm these days (but what do I know?!! maybe it has come back into vogue.). fwiw the kid I know in Whitis signed up late.
