need help with math problem

How do you do this one:

At a party, there was one pizza for every 3 people, one salad for every 6 people, and one cake for every 8 people. If the total number of pizzas, salads, and cakes was "n", then, in terms of "n", how many people were at the party?

A) 8/5 n
B) 3/2 n
C) 7/4 n
D) 2n
E) 9/4 n

the answer is a i believe. these questions are really easy if you pick numbers which you substitute for those variables. first i picked a number divisible by 3, 6 and 8 which will be the number of people at the party. i picked 24. the you divide it by 3, 6 and 8 to get the number of pizzas, salads and cakes. so the "n" = 24/3 + 24/6 + 24/8= 15. there were 24 people. 24/15=8/5 therefore a.

That is right, thanks. I picked 24 but stupidly put 3/24, 6/24,and 8/24 instead of the reverse.

is it for your son??

im wondering if that can be solved algebraically..

p people
p/3 + p/6 + p/8 = n
5/8 p = n
p = 8/5 n

easiest approach!!!
