So I am going to be a senior in high school for fall of 2010 and I would love to be a music education major. I have been playing trumpet for 7 years now and I feel like I have the work ethic and talent needed for a music major. My gpa is a 97 currently (with college level and ap classes) and a 1860 on the SAT's. Currently I am positive that I will be applying to Ithaca, SUNY Potsdam, and SUNY Fredonia but I need 4 more schools to apply to, do any of you have knowledge on decent music schools for trumpet? I mainly need to find out some safety music schools if possible, thank you in advance!

There are no safety schools, any school that requires an audition is a crap shoot.
Music education is for teaching grades 1 - 12. Is that what you want to do ?

yes i would love to teach grades 1-12.

by safety schools i mean schools with lesser music programs that aren’t as intensive

Hi,
Maybe you could look into the music program at University of Maryland, College Park? I’m not sure how intense it is though.

i have considered looking there actually, i have heard great things about their program actually! thank you for the advice!

Plenty of previous music education info here. Try separate title searches on “music ed” and “music education”. Do the same for “trumpet” and check for cross references, but realize the best options for performance are not necessarily the best options for music ed. This may help http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/892168-search-tips-other-insights.html

Music ed is normally most cost effective within your instate public system, but any number of factors may make some of the privates cost effective options.

And if you haven’t already done so, please read this http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/258796-so-you-want-music-major-one-familys-experience.html

thank you very much, i did take a look at the music major thread.

i will search the threads for music education programs with decent trumpet studies. I’m just trying to finish up my list of schools before the summer gets underway so I can fit in some visits

Hi Trumpet. You can PM me if you are interested in getting any info about Potsdam. My son is a Euphonium Performance/Music Ed double major entering his 2nd year. John Ellis the trumpet draw at Potsdam is the faculty advisor for his brass quintet and “Doc” Elllis is noted as an excellent professor and performer.

i am actually going up to crane on june 27th for their youth music program! I have heard nothing but good things about the program and I will surely message you soon, thank you!

I’ll be there as well, my daughter is attending CYM again this summer.

very nice! i look forward to CYM! does anyone else have advice for me in this manner?

Don’t get caught up in the name game with schools. My daughter found a gem at Florida International University. The trumpet prof Jim Hacker is awesome. The progress she has made under him is amazing. Also, he’s not one of these academics, he is a professional musician. Google him and see. Additionally, FIU has arguably the world’s greatest trumpet player, Arturo Sandoval on staff. I like the fact that a lot of the staff are in the business and not just teachers. If you can establish Florida residency, the tuition is very affordable.

thank you for the advice! I’m not looking for the name really, more just I want a music school within a university/ college. I will take a look at FIU for sure!

If CA isn’t too far away consider Univ of Redlands.

Check out West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Excellent, well rounded education, with a great applied music as well as music education faculty. The cost for tuition and fees is very reasonable as well. The trumpet professor is very well liked. Not to mention, if you wish to study jazz improv John Swana teaches there. Ridiculously good jazz trumpeter!

hey guys sorry for the late response, been busy with college essays/ audition prep!

Crane youth music was AMAZING!!! i loved crane and dr ellis was the man. I got a lot of positive feedback from him and I’d love to try and get in there.

I also have decided on all my schools now!!

Do any of you know if you have to pass the aural exam at crane in order to get in? or is the audition the main criteria?

^^ You have to pass both the audition and the music theory/aurals.

o alright, just wanted to check b/c i want to start preparing for the aural/ theory portion. The only part im really skeptical on is the sight singing b/c everything else isnt that hard. do you have any idea how the exam is graded?

Not a clue unfortunately though I will ask my son when I get the chance. His Aural was 5 minutes, the guy before him 25, go figure.

thank you !!!
