I just got my Ap Scores back and they are VERY mediocre(NOT A SINGLE 5)....

AP World History-10th- 4
AP US History - 11th - 4
AP Calculus AB- 11th - 11th -4
AP Biology- 12th - 4
AP Calculus BC-12th - 4
AP Government-12th - 4
AP Macroeconomics-12th - 4

^^^^ This means I should have around 28 hours of credit from Emory....I am thinking about taking my credits for World History, US History, Goverment, Economics.....

As a pre-med I only need 1 year of math, so I was wondering if I should do Calc BC over again, or just go do Calc AB over again, with a semester of Statistics(I have to keep my gpa up, so I need to do well in the math class I choose)......Also should I accept my credits for Biology?....I plan on taking Biochemistry again in college(Its recommeneded for medical school)...If I do accept my AP Biology credit, could it hurt me on the Mcats? (since its going to be a long time since I learned the information, when I take the mcats)...

Also some medical schools require a year of calculus, lets say I take my ap credits for calculus, and then decide to take Statistics and anther math(not calculus) in college? Would those medical schools take my calculus credit, even though I did not take calculus in college?

Regarding the math aspect of your question that i didn’t answer in the other post, i’ll quote a piece of information that was on my own college’s CC discussion board in a thread that i made with a similar question:

I didn’t confirm this myself, so I’m taking his word for it because he seemed pretty credible. Anyways, if you “need to do well” in these courses and are worried about your GPA I would probably take Calc1/Stat or Calc1/2 or Calc2/stat or something of the sort. Calc 1 is AB material and I’m assuming Calc 2 is BC material (i’m not positive because my lame high school didn’t offer BC … small budget ftl :()

I was told not to use the credit for pre-reqs, simply because it’s just another bar they’ve set that everyone has to meet. I’d definitely say take the Gov’t and Econ and History credit, as that’d free your schedule up considerably, but I was told that I should forfeit my bio and calculus credit because they’re pre-reqs.

They are pre-reqs, but intro bio is usually a “weedout” class or generally more competitive due to the large amount of students in the class. Also you can always take a higher level bio class if you plan on taking the credit to fill the pre-req, as in Physio/Genetics.

4. Mathematics: one year of calculus. Advanced placement credits may satisfy this requirement (Calculus AB - 1 semester, Calculus BC - 2 semesters). A course in statistics does not meet this requirement.

So when colleges say they require Calculus? I can use my AP credits for that? I would defintaly do it then…Right now I am not looking at Texas A&M Medical School, Texas Tech Medical School, and all the UT medical schools(Galveston is my favorite UT school right now) and Mercer College of Medicine…So most other schools only require a semster of Calculus right,? since you guys say that only 3 medical schools require a year of medical school?..

I know less than nothing about Mercer but I don’t believe they accept any OOS. Maybe going to Emory gives you some sort of dual citizenship but I’d check. As to all the Texas schools two semesters AP credit gets it done if it appears as credit on your undergraduate transcript with a course number.

hahaha sorry about that paragraph…I was on the phone and typing fast because I had to go somewhere…Mercer is a private school…

so when colleges say they require calculus, I can use my AP credits for it right? That means that I wouldn’t have to take any math in college because my ap credits can also satisfy my major’s requirements…Right now I am looking at Texas A&M’s Medical School, Texas Tech’s Medical School, and all the UT Medical Schools(UT-Galveston is my favorite), along with Mercer College of Medicine…most of the medical schools I listed require Calculus(1 semester of 2 semesters worth, idk exactly), but you guys are saying that I can use my Ap credits for them(the reason I am cautious to do this is becuase its seems bad to not take any math in college, I hope medical schools won’t frown upon it, because Physicians need to be a little good at math)…

^^^This post probably doesn’t make any sense either, I was playing xbox live while I typed…

I’ll check Mercer’s requirements for you. I know Mercer’s private. I’m from Georgia (;)). But I still believe they take no OOS. Edit: Here ya go

My D had a 5 in Calc BC and took Statistics (from the math department) as her only college math course. That would NOT be good enough for some Cali schools (and a couple of others), but she had no trouble building a list of med schools. As to your school’s major requirements, I’ve got no idea.

UTSW is going to require one semester of math taken in college; you can use statistics to cover that. You can use AP for calc there as long as it shows up on your transcript with the course number that it replaced as curmudgeon has said.

You may want to start to adjust your thinking about your choice as your number one med school; UTMB may not even exist by the time you are applying to schools. There is considerable discussion underway to close or move it. It took a beating in the hurricanes, was forced to close for a while, lost faculty etc, much like what happened to Tulane.

There is a lot of talk about either moving it to Austin or replacing it with an all new med school in Austin. The Austin location would certainly increase its desirability and I would think also make it a more difficult admit.

^^^ I hope they don’t plan on doing that in the next 8 years(It was 1 hurricane, Hurricanes rarely hit the same location in the same decade, I hope they don’t shut down UT-Galveston)…Wait, I am confused, are you saying that I can use my AP Calc credit for UTSW, but I will still have to take 1 semester of math in college?
