Need help with some college decisions

Ok so right now I am a senior in high school and I have passed the ap european test with a 3 and the ap american history test with a 4 and my gpa is 3.7 unweighted. I have about 200 hours in community service and I have been in a few clubs. My current classes are 5 ap classes which include ap calculus and ap chemistry and I plan on majoring in chemical engineering. I have some questions so here it goes-

  1. If i go to a CSU and then transfer to a UC like UC Santa Barbara what process will I have to go through?
  2. What are my chances of getting into UCSB compared to San Jose State university?
  3. Will my high school grades matter if I decide to go to San Jose, like will UCSB still look at them and do GPAs reset in college like they do when you start a semester in high school?
  4. I havnt taken the SAT and i already signed up for them and what scores would i have to get if i want to increase my chances of getting into UCSB?

Why not go to a community college, then transfer to UC Santa Barbara ?

I really don’t want to risk it because I live in Manteca and the Junior colleges by me get full really fast and I had a cousin who has been going to a junior college for 4 years and he is trying to be an accountant and he still hasnt been able to transfer out because he hasnt been able to take all his classes. I just want to see if i have good chance of being admitted as a freshman instead of transfering out and ill look at financial aid as well.

Is there another community college around your area?

There are a few but like I said they get filled up pretty fast I have 2 near me and the closest one besides those 2 is a 30 minute drive which im not trying to do on a daily basis

I drive 45 minutes every day to attend my community college. What is your UC gpa?

I think it is a 3.6

I mean I want to look at the costs and everything and applying to a UC costs $60 so i dont want to waste my money by sending the application and knowing I have no chance

Average UC GPA for UCSB is 4.05 with an average SAT of 1937. For Chemical Engineering, your Stats need to be above the average, so I would aim for at least a 2000+ SAT score. What is your UC GPA? http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

As stated in above posts, if you want to transfer into UCSB, you are better off going to a CC for 2 years and then transfer. CSU to UC transfers are possible, but you need to figure out which courses are transferable. You can use assist.org to get an idea of what courses are UC transferable for UCSB and map these to the CSU courses.

You would have a better chance at getting an acceptance at SJSU. They use an eligbility index threshold for each major so based on this years admission stats, you need an EI of 3400. If your CSU/UC GPA is around 3.7 ish, you need a SAT Math + CR score of around 500 to make the threshold for SJSU. Thresholds do flutuate from year to year, but you look like a competitive applicant even without an SAT. SJSU is a match.

If you plan to transfer from a CSU, SAT scores, HS GPA, HS EC’s are not considered, only your CSU GPA etc… and you need a minimum 60 semester units (Junior level transfer).

Thank you for the information Gumbymom

Not disparaging Manteca but, I understand wanting to move on…

With a 3.6, UCGPA, a 2000+ SAT and stellar essay, you might make it into UCSB as a freshman. That said, UCR, UCM and USCS are your best UC shots.

If, after settling in you don’t like the school, you can transfer UC to UC - in fact, it is easier than transferring from a CSU because the coursework at UCs is more closely aligned.

I’d encourage you to apply to those schools and add SDSU, CSULB and Fullerton.

Without your test scores I can’t really say where you’ll get in but, apply to several schools, see what happens. Visit them in April and see how you feel.

A tough sell for most parents but. Santa Barbara CC then TAG to UCSB is another option -

Good luck
