I have a good idea of what they are looking for in the 500 word personal statement: a anecdote, or a reflection, and intelligent, articulate thoughts about yourself or what has defined you. Got it.

Well, there is the Extra-Cirricular essay on the Common App, and I am struggling with it. They give you 150 words to elaborate on an EC, but what exactly about that EC would they like you to discuss? Are they expecting you to come to some magical conclusion about who you are? Should it just be an elaboration of what you've done in that activity and your acheivements?
I'm quite frankly, very clueless, and would appreciate your help.

My most important activity is X. I love X because. I have done X for y amount of time.

They are asking you to elaborate on an interest. In the process, something about you should be revealed. It doesn't have to be ground breaking or transcendent. It can be that you are competitive, shy, generous, or just really like bugs.

it's not supposed to be profound, but at least make it interesting with some puns or by making fun of yourself or SOMETHING.

"Chorus has been a very important aspect of my life for the past four years. I dedicate a lot of my free time to numerous groups at my school and church. I have even auditioned for many... blah blah blah... I know I would not be the same person without singing; it lives in my heart."
NOT INTERESTING.
