Thanks for your input. I have been hearing one thing from at least 5 people in person, though - "You can't go wrong no matter what you decide". I guess it's true... but that almost makes it a more difficult decision than if there was one clearly better option.

Weirdly enough, in the mornings nowadays I want to go to Penn, but in the evenings it'll switch and I'll say, "deal with it for two more years, you've already ahead of the game at WM".

Maybe I'll just wait for some sort sign about this decision...

Thats what im saying brand; just because its an ivy, people are saying that he MUST attend it, which is baloney! Not everyone that is successful attended an ivy, and ivy isnt guaranteed success either, and ESPECIALLY in the undergrad level.

that's ridiculous. Read the thread and direct me to the post where i told her she MUST go to penn because it's an ivy.Look- she can't decide between W&M and penn so she came on here and asked for our opinions. Are you going to attack everyone who thinks she should go to penn and call them prestige-whores?lol... Everyone has got their own opinion....

In the real world most people cant name half the schools that comprise the Ivy League. If you like Philly and want to try something new then change schools. If you feel you are suffereing from "greener grass" syndrome, take a deep breath and give your new routine at W&M a chance to blossom, esp if have made some good friends there.

Since both schools are similarly prestigious, your future will be dictated more by your efforts, not the name on the diploma.

I agree with Gtown and Penn students having similar opportunities. W and M, I am sorry I cannot say that is the case. Listen, this is a world driven by prestige. And let's face it, W and M, does not carry, OMG. Most ppl will not even know what state it is in, let alone how good of a school it is. UPenn on the other hand on the north-east, is probably one of the hottest schools, after HYPM.

If you look at the captains of industry, politics, and the top of basically any field and you will see an overwhelming majority went to Ivy League(and comparable) schools. Just look at our recent presidents and almost every one at least went to grad school at an Ivy, most of the supreme court justices went to Ivy and comparable schools for both undergrad and law school.

The fact is that Ivy League on average has THE best students in America, if not the world and of course the fact that you went to an Ivy league school is going to open many doors for you.

W&M is not a bad school, in fact it is a very good institution, so I'm not saying that the OP should go to Penn no matter what but in general the Penn name is going to open many more doors. Whether or not the OP thinks this is worth sacrifice his/her current social life for the sake of prestige, and a more challenging student body, is totally their decision as there is no clear cut answer to the question.

Columbiahopeful! - William and Mary is the 2nd oldest school in the nation and one that is well known. My redneck uncle all the way down in the boonies of Texas knew of only one school in addition to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, and West Point. Wanna guess which one it was?

People know W&M to be an excellent school. Perhaps it is not quite as good as UPenn or Georgetown, but it is a great school. And FYI, most people down here in Texas confuse UPenn with Penn State but have heard of W&M/Georgetown, so I guess it just depends on where you live too.

the majority of people always think University of pennsylvania is a state school, like the university of california and all the other U of State schools.

just check the alumni of both schools to see which one is more impressive and Penn has only gotten better. The last few years, Penn has become one of America's hottest schools, with a yield rate only surpassed by HYPS.

is that the PEOPLE who matter think that UPenn is superior to W and M.

Do they really think there's that big of a difference though? It seems that W&M is in there with the likes of UChicago/Reed/Swat as far as being seen as a very tough school that prepares great students that are in high demand.

Obviously in the business world Penn wins hands down, but for grad/prof school placement, I think someone with a comparable GPA from W&M is actually seen in an equal or even more favorable light b/c W&M is so damn tough.

and to be honest, what is more surprising is that this person got into Penn with a 3.3 gpa, when there are tons of students on CC that had near 4.0s at similar schools who got denied......

ok brand, you can try to make all of these logic jumps, but they will not work with people who have a half a brain. Why on earth would W and M gpa be more highly regarded than a Penn gpa when Penn is a lot more selective, has a higher sat average, a more accomplished student body, and just more prestige??
