hello, people~ i decide to apply this autumn, and i'm now taking all those tests(toefl,sat1,sat2 and lots of ap). The thing is that i've no idea what i should do then. i mean how th go through the apply process. should i find a agency? or DIY? i highly doubt the value of agencies, but i'm not confident of doing all by myself...you know, all those people around went to agencies at the time they applied, and the only one i knew chose DIY only got in her bottom line college(she got a 2100+ on SAT though) i'm realy not an all-star on tests as she was(but my scores are ok though).
so what should i do?

scores are not the problem. I DIY and got a 2060 and I got in way above my bottom line (which is UMich). Agency can help you make your essays look better, so that’s why it seems people using agency can get in better school. Though I would say that’s not necessary true.

I suggest you should take SATI and II first than take TOEFL since the last one is much easier than the other.

But most importantly, the ESSAY!! If you can write good ones, you’re doomed. So if you really think you should find a agency, go. But to be honest, I’m totally against it since I believe it is not the students’ real and honest job.

you could do it through an agency while keeping your own opinion. don’t wholly trust what agencies say.Otherwise, I think that agencies would be quite helpful even though I applied without one ;)

I view the agencies as more like cheating that will eventually hurt you. You can find all the information you need from the university website & the rest of the internet. There are plenty of very informative sources on everything from finding the right program to putting together the application package. Also, all of the first tier universities have the requirements listed clearly on their website and if you have any questions, you can always e-mail them. If you can’t do that then you shouldn’t even consider studying in the US … because unlike in China, your professor is not going to bundle all the work you need to do in a neat package and they won’t even spend a second to make sure you are on top of everything. You gotta be a lot more independent, both academically and living in the US.

I am a new college advisor and would like to help you out for free in exchange of experience. I am Chinese and based in California.

Agencies are such a waste of time, like someone else says. If you’re truly ready to study in the U.S., then you should be willing to do it all yourself, which you definitely can. Check this link out, read the other steps.
