We’re traveling to the New Haven area for a small, outdoor memorial service this weekend. I need tips for where to stay around New Haven. I’d like to keep it to ~$150-200/night. I’d prefer an area where we can walk to get something to eat, but I don’t know what areas are safe. I’d appreciate any tips.
How far are you willing to travel? The Westport Inn in Westport CT isn’t bad, but it’s ~35 minutes from New Haven.
Which direction are you coming from? Orange is probably the nicest close by New Haven suburb if you are coming from the West/South. Not sure you will find the walkability you are looking for, but you will be able to find places to eat.
Hilton Garden Inn in Milford- couple of fast food places in walking distance, a very good local diner. Hyatt Place in Milford- sort of across the street from it. Both clean, well taken care of. Right by the highway but on a walkable street (busy but there are traffic lights) and a couple of places to eat.
Brand New Homewood Suites in Orange (it’s right by a highway overpass) which is technically within walking distance of restaurants but since you’re crossing a highway access road to do it- probably not. But a five minute drive to the Post Road (aka main street in most New England towns) with restaurants.
Any of the New Haven hotels near Yale. All within walking distance of college type ethnic restaurants and in a bustling downtown. Which town do you need to be near?
There is also a Hilton Garden in Wallingford.
I just got in. Sorry for the late reply.
We’re coming from NY. I’d like to stay within 45 minutes of New Haven. These are all great leads. Thank you.
Sorry for your loss.
The Omni on Temple Street is right by Yale and the New Haven Green, walking distance to lots of places.
There are a number of chain places in Hamden and North Haven that are ok but you might need to drive in suburban traffic for restaurants.
I would stay at The Study. Right next to restaurants, the Yale Art Museums, the Yale Rep, a great bookstore coffee shop called Atticus and a perfectly safe area. I would avoid the Courtyard Inn on Whaley Avenue at the western edge of the Yale campus. The Omni by the old mall downtown is also not in as nice an area. The Study is centrally located for the Old Campus and next to the nicest restaurant hub in New Haven outside of Yale. You should also check out their new place next door called The Graduate; might be 50-100 bucks less a night and it was completely redone just before the pandemic hit… best location again, by far.
Meh. What is going on in New Haven that has all the hotels booked this weekend? The Hilton Garden, Hyatt Place, The Study, and The Graduate are all booked. I guess I’ll have to give up restaurants within walking distance. At this point, a hotel with an available room in a safe area would be nice.
Sorry you’re having trouble. Hope you can find something. What about an airbnb? You could also look for something along the shore, like Branford. Not too far from the city. Definitely try some New Haven Pizza while you’re here. Can’t go wrong with Modern, Sally’s, or Pepe’s.
Maybe there is an Airbnb or hotel near or in Guilford? Or Old Saybrook?
Thanks for the great ideas. We were able to find an Airbnb outside of Guilford. I didn’t realize so many people were traveling. I would have expected it in Nov. and Dec., but I didn’t expect it this early.
It’s leaf peeping season.
Check out the New Haven Hotel next to the medical school. It used to be a so-so area but it’s nice now and really integrated into the Yale campus closer to the school of Public Health but still close to College and Chapel Streets. Another interesting alternative might be to get an Air BnB either in Wooster Square (Pepe’s and Sally’s etc) which is like a mini mini mini Boston North End (one street 5-6 places to eat, best pizza in the country for our taste at Sally’s).
Husband is from New Haven and agreed there can be sketchy areas! Possibly the reason for the full lodgings is the first Yale-UConn game in 22 years. Alumni maybe?
I think the game is in Hartford.
Ah, not that then.
It is, and I cannot think of any reason why the hotels would all be booked as last weekend was the cancelled Parents’ Weekend and Fall Recess starts this coming Wednesday. The leaves haven’t really changed yet here along the coast.
See if you can use the code SMART when booking the Graduate. Parents highly recommend it.
We just stayed in the lovely town one over, Hamden. Clarion Hotel, great rates, wonderful breakfast buffet included. For us a ten minute straight drive in to Yale Univ admissions where we were headed early the next morning. $129 booked on line. (The indoor pool is under renovation.) Nice, clean room. Quiet hotel set back on main road. Very quiet. We were happy and would certainly stay here again.
