Need ideas for enginnering/art combo school

How sad for her. No wonder she was ranting on facebook. She does have a dilemma if she will need parental funding. So, like a young poster on another thread, if she starts out in engineering or science-related major, she will pretty much have to start over with foundation classes. For example at Cincinnati, I have heard that they are notorious for not letting credits transfer when going from one school at the univ (i.e.engineering) to DAAP.

Also, engineering is a really tough major to choose as the bait and switch major to get into school. If her heart is not into her courses, she puts herself at risk for getting less than good grades for the transfer school to evaluate.

hmmm…could she apply to Florida in a compromise major and then apply to VCU, etc in what she really wants? That way, if she gets a great scholarship in her desired field at an out of state school, she has some leverage in the final decision.

Son is @ UC/DAAP (Design, Architecture, Art, Planning). It is among the most rigorous design programs in US not affiliated with pure art school…and is currently #2 in country. But it is a 5 year commitment to long hard work. Industrial Design is a great combo for those with the “creative engineer” flair…but programs vary widely with emphasis generally skewed to technical or art. Many ID programs start with the major and art foundation courses day one, making it difficult to transfer in to the programs. Some (especially State U’s like Arizona and Michigan) don’t let you declare until Jr year…and if you dont grab one of the 20-40 slots, you’ve spent two years of out of state liberal arts tuition with little payback. So best bet for ID … Know it’s what you want, and commit to a dedicated and all-consuming major.
