Need info for my Taiwanese girlfriend who wants to leave school early

Hey guys, my girlfriend needs info, can you help me out?

She wants to leave school early, and I need to know if it’s possible for her to do so and still study abroad in America.

Anyway, I’ll just ask.

There’s a Taiwanese version of a GED called a General equivalency certificate. When leaving school early, will that Taiwanese GED be accepted here in the US at colleges?

She’s almost fluent in English because of her school being a language college, so passing the TOEFL won’t be that hard for her. She’s a bit worried about the SAT though, will all colleges require that? what about community colleges?

The plan is to go to community college here first before transferring to a fashion design college

There’s a lot she’s worried about, any tips can give would be way appreciated.

Thanks guys

Going to a community college, as an international student, won’t be cheap. Depending on the community college, they typically don’t sponsor international students.

As for a GED from Taiwan, you need to ask at the community college she hopes to attend.

Yea, we plan to save up money working together for a year if she decides to leave after this school year

The deal is, shes’s 18 in her third year, and if she stays in school she’ll be 20 by the time she finishes and can go to college. She doesn’t want that.

Do you think she should stay and study to get a scholarship to a US college/university though?

Mostly though, can someone who’s studied abroad give her some tips so she knows what she’s getting into

Most international students do not qualify for scholarships unless they have been well-prepared for merit monies and are tip-top students at tip-top schools.

These universities are very competitive and only take a limited amount of international candidates. This means top scores and GPA. If your girlfriend does not have great SAT scores, a great GPA and good EC’s her chances for scholarships are extremely limited.

Have her try to find an EducationUSA office near her.

It’s unlikely you can save enough to pay for your girlfriend’s education. Two years of community college can cost well over $30,000 just for 2 tuition alone. Many fashion programs are offered in private universities which can cost up to $60,000 per year.

This plan would work, if she can afford it

Is that really so? Not that I don’t trust you guys

I just read online that community college is more affordable for international students, so I’m trying to figure it out.

I thought it would be only $6000 or so for 2 years, but is it really $30,000 for most?

Which community college (s) are you looking at? Since your GF is International and not a in-state resident, she will be paying OOS student fees where ever she attends.

Honestly, we haven’t identified which ones yet, because we decided we’re going to work for up to 2 years before sending admission and starting it.

One that’s affordable and transferable to a college with a fashion design degree though

All around though, would you say the SAT is required for most international students?

And, so there’s a huge difference of cost in community college for international students?

Here is an example of a community college in California and the costs for International Students. Cost are pretty typical for all CCC’s in California.

Tuition & Fees

Students at an school event signing forms. All tuition and fees are due and payable in full at the time of registration. International students are required to provide proof of funding in the form of a bank letter or bank statement with official signature/seal. All bank verifications should indicate U.S. currency and be dated within six months of the term start date. Your financial sponsor (self, parent, relative or friend) must sign and complete the enclosed form.

Following is an estimation of a typical international student’s expenses for an academic year.

TOTAL YEARLY EXPENSES*

$25,940.00 USD

Tuition of 24 units at $227 per unit $5,448.00
Enrollment Fee of 24 Units at $46 per unit $1,104.00
Health Fee ($19 per semester) $38.00
Student Activities & Rep. Fees ($11.50 per semester) $23.00
Student Transportation Fee ($9 per semester) $18.00
Books & Supplies $1,746.00
TOTAL TUITION AND FEES $8,395.00
Food $5,040.00
Housing $10,920.00
Medical Insurance (required) $1,585.00
TOTAL LIVING EXPENSES $17,545.00

The costs depend on the state. In some states, community colleges are less expensive than in others.

Keep in mind that your girlfriend will be attending as an international student, all of whom pay out-of-state tuition for their entire education.

So yes, the tuition, health insurance and schools fees can be as much as $15,000/year or more even at a community college. Here’s an example of a community college in my state - Colorado.

California has cheaper community colleges – but the cost of living and taxes there are high so you’re still paying in that range or more.

My daughter is still in high school and she is taking CAL 3 DE this year at our local Community College, because our house is not in the same taxing area as the CC, we have to pay out of district tuition. Her tuition for the one CAL 3 class is over $1200 for ONE class one semester and this does not include books and parking fees and we are IN STATE residents!

You really need to look at this on a case by case basis, every state and every CC has different rules.

Your girlfriend should FIRST decide which fashion design program to attend, and then see if she can transfer any credits from a community colleges. Not all programs accept community college credits.

You do not have to have SATs for most community colleges.

Ok guys : )

This is a lot of info to take in.

I’ll keep this in mind and tell her all of this, how much it’ll cost, and all the info and planning we need to do.

If she decides to leave school and we go ahead with the plan, I might be back for more advice later on.

Again, thanks all, and have a good night.
