Hi,
Next year I will be in 10th grade and will apply for 11th grade but I have heard that maybe schools dont really accept kids for 11th grade or it is wayyyy harder to get in. Is this true?

Anyway I am average age for my grade, born late 1993, and I have no special reasons to repeat although I know that an extra year would be benefitial. Would they let me apply as a repeat? How do you apply as a repeat?

When you apply as a repeat do you take the SSAT are you ranked with your normal age or with the kids you are applying with?

The SSAT percentile, I believe, is compared to students of your age who take the test regardless of what grade you are applying for.

And yes, I have heard of many people who are repeating a grade going into boarding school. One of my friends from my school applied as a repeating 10th grader to Andover and got accepted. I believe he got waitlisted to a few others as well…

To apply as a repeat, you fill out the application just like everyone else but you’ll have to mark that you will be repeating your 10th grade year.

And it is true that getting accepted as an 11th grader is pretty hard… Most schools don’t accept that many 11th graders, but you never know. It always depends on whatever happens to the school (in terms of enrollment/lack of returning students, recruiting athletes/artists, etc) =]

To other posters - please correct me if I’m wrong about any of the things I’ve said. =)

Can you apply as either? In other words, can you say, I’ll apply as an 11th grader but will be willing to repeat if the school thinks it’s a better fit for me?

My son applied as a 11th grader and it is true that there are fewer spots but also less applicants. Most of the schools we applied to had about 10 or less spots available for juniors. However very school we spoke to told us it was much harder as a junior than as a sophomore, so you may want to apply as a repeat. Many students apply as repeats so it is not like you will be older than everyone in your grade.

My son will repeat in the fall. When we completed the SSAT information, he was scored as an eighth grader since he was applying as a repeat ninth grader. A classmate of his applied as a 10th grader to day schools and ninth grader to boarding schools. He signed up for the SSAT as a ninth grader. Our school’s placement director sent to the boarding schools the re-scored results as an eighth grader as well. If you repeat, the schools you are applying to can also re-score for your results.
