Hello, I want to know the difference between on-campus housing and off-campus housing that SCHOOL provides. In regards to costs, size, living style. Who clean the rooms in off-campus housing, is it like a home, do I have to stay with someone? I am a freshman.
Of course it will depend on the school, but almost all off campus housing, even if university owned, is like an apartment and usually the student cleans and keeps the apartment. There might be single apartments, but usually they are more expensive.
Contact the school and ask. This will vary from school to school.
Even in a dorm room, the students are expected to clean their own rooms. There is not maid service. Did you really expect someone to clean your room as a college student?
Check your college requirements. Many require freshmen to live on campus. And in many cases the nice apartment style dorms are available to upperclassmen on,y.
^^ Many schools overseas provide maid service in dorms. Stunned me, but it was quite common in many French schools, and other students who studied abroad had the same experience.
You will most likely share a room with a roommate.
My dorm had limited maid service! We had people clean the halls and bathrooms, community areas, and occasionally mop the floors in the dorm rooms. I can’t remember if you had to ask or not. We also had a sheet service and every Monday you took your sheets downstairs and exchanged them for a clean set.
Alas, we did have to walk our trash to the shoot at then end of the hall.
It varies so much from school to school you need to ask your specific institution. btw- anything owned and run by a university is usually considered part of the campus I thought. Perhaps you are thinking of dorms versus apartments.
No matter where you live be prepared to take care of yourself. There are no servants available and most kids need to take care of themselves. This includes laundry, ironing (if you own clothes you want ironed), food shopping (unless on a meal plan), cleaning, washing dishes used in one’s room/apt, making one’s bed (although I don’t think my son ever made his- he doesn’t now, either although he can does his sheets) and a host of other independent living activities. btw- a future physician or judge could be the one working as a student to clean dorm hall bathrooms or various dorm food service jobs.
Twoinandone…we also had the service you described…in the 1970’s. Not too many colleges out there now that have cleaning for things other than the common areas. I don’t know of any college that provides cleaning services for the actual dorm rooms in the U.S.
This student is wondering who will clean his room. I would suggest that the student should plan on doing the cleaning.
Is there a particular school you are talking about? University of Chicago has university housing that is off the campus.
Look at the website for the school. They will often list information about location, description, prices of different living arrangements and whether singles are available or not. Singles, doubles, triples and suites may be available. Some university house could be apartments or townhouses. It will not be like a house, it will be like a dorm or apartment. If the website doesn’t have information there will be some way to give you the information if there is a choice.
In the U.S. students take care of their own cleaning of their immediate living space. I suppose some students who have funds available may hire house cleaners on their own, but it is not usual for most students.
Both of my kids lived off campus after sophomore year. I believe they paid for cleaning service once a week, but they made their own bed and cooked for themselves. That being said, OP can certainly pay for maid service if that’s what he wants, but it would not be included in the housing cost.
