Need Major Guidance

I have applied to Texas A&M and a lot of people tell me that I may have a chance of getting accepted but I am unsure due to my test scores, My ACT is 16 and my SAT composite was 380 but altogether it was 1230. Do any of you know if I’m shooting for the stars by applying and should start looking for other options? A&M is my dream school and I would want more than anything to go.

^Your SAT: 1230 out of 2400? What is 380?

Yes my 1230 was out of 2400. On My application it said my composite SAT score was 380, I am unsure of how they got that number.

Probably from averaging your CR+W+M sections. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a composite SAT score though… or maybe I’m just highly unobservant.

Does your school rank? Top 10% is auto-admission, and anything below goes through regular admission, which TBH I honestly know very little about.

Who is telling you your admissions chances?

You should look and compare yourself to the admitted freshmen in TAMU’s Common Data Set

http://dars.tamu.edu/Data-and-Reports/Student/files/CDS_2013-2014.aspx

Sections C9 and C10 (page 8) show you the typically admitted student.

SAT 25th percentile: ~1560
SAT 75th percentile: ~1900
ACT 25th percentile: 23
ACT 75th percentile: 29

Kids who have scores like you are in the 1-2% of the freshmen class, most likely the top athletic recruits. Given this data, you’re extremely unlikely to be admitted to TAMU. What other schools have you targeted?

Many college deadlines have already passed. You need to see your HS guidance counselor ASAP – or you may not be attending anywhere in Sept. Good luck to you.

If you’re auto-admit, then all you have to wait on is your specific major. If you’re not auto-admit, for Texas publics it’s mainly based on your GPA (probably unweighted?) and test scores. They simply don’t have the manpower to look through that many EC lists and essays. As T26E4 said, your scores don’t show a strong likelihood of your being admitted.

@Constantius‌ @desperate15‌

I always considered Composite is M+R sections. However 1230-380=850. So that doesn’t make sense that one section would be 850. I think you might be reading something wrong, OP.

@hopefulper so what you’re saying is I should not get my hopes up for TAMU? I know they offer a summer program for kids to take classes in the summer then in the fall they admit them into the university but I am not sure how or if I qualify for that

@TheDidactic Yeah, for some reason I was thinking about ACT and mixed it up with SAT. Averaging doesn’t even make sense, since 1230/3 would be 410 and not 380. Not sure what I was thinking, but I’ve been feverish for days, so I blame that.

You’re not rejected until you get official confirmation, but I’d say have some backup options open. I’d look into that summer program if TAMU is still your first choice.
