Hey Guys I'm relatively new here at this forum, but I really need some guidance on this issue,

To start off with I have a passion for drawing and making comics and have been doing them since I was fairly young. I'm at my last year of highschool and decided beforehand I wanted to do graphic design while making comics on the side. but I've been doing a lot of research on those who have been in the career and it seems that it's not what I thought it was, meaning that it's very competitive and you don't really make a decent living (If you want to start a family and support them) I mean to sum it all up, I want a job thats stable and pays well and something that I love doing but Graphic design doesn't seem to be worth going to a university to make a salary that can barely put food on the table. So I've decided to go with science since I'm good at it and since it interests me.

I'm looking at physiology and I've read that most who go into the field either go into further research or go onto to medical school and become a doctor , so I thought becoming a doctor wouldn't be so bad,( I know the amount of time and effort and struggle that comes with it) but the cost of medical school and the time bothers me and I dont know If I'll be happy being a doctor for the rest of my life ( I know that most doctors don't really, sincerely enjoy their profession and its becoming harder for them nowadays (obama care) so guys what should I do? should I go with Art and make fairly decent living or take the long, yet rewarding path of a doctor and become one? also Doctors how is the profession? Graphic designers how is the profession also? can you be an artist and a doctor at the same time? (correct me if my views are wrong and I'm open to all advice I can get, thank you.)

If you don’t find medicine stimulating and worth all the stress of med school, you’ll never graduate let alone practice. It is an investment but there are cheaper schools and loan forgiveness schemes if you’re willing to commit to a community in need. You need to arrange to speak to a practising doctor as well as watch the tons of videos on youtube about med school and working life. Doctors will still earn a wage way in excess of most other professions. I’m in the UK. We have a state health system. And your GP (family practitioner) can earn £90,000 ($140,000) annually. If that isn’t an extremely attractive wage I don’t know what is.

Graphic design is poorly paid compared to other skilled professions. Self employment is one way to earn more but that’s more risky. You need to build up a brand and market yourself. But it has many, many sub areas- packaging design, logos/ branding etc.

A science major doesn’t tie you to grad school nor does an art degree tie you to the arts. With either major you could become a teacher, police officer, business manager, entrepreneur, military officer, store manager, administrator etc. You could also go for a complete change and become a baker, truck driver or refuse collector. Your major needn’t control your life.

And did you know that you could be an art major and still go to med school if you’ve taken the pre-req classes?

As for doctors who do comic books, take a look at [Graphic Medicine | Exploring the interaction between the medium of comics and the discourse of healthcare.](http://www.graphicmedicine.org/)

I apologize for my late reply but I thank you for taking the time out of your day to give a stranger advice lol, decent people still do exist haha but I understand that going to an university just for GD is a waste of money for I had the skill and talent (as noted by others, not gloating) here so I want to go to school for something worthwhile, something in the medical field–perhaps physiology and see where I can go from there, but again, thanks!

Graphic design is not a waste of time. The only research you can really do is internet searches about careers in graphic design. Most graphic designers who succeed are entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs are the wealthiest people in our society but you can’t find data on them. If you work for someone, you may get to be upper middle class in some professions but only rarely does an employee become rich.

If you want a safe, stable life then choose medicine but be forewarned…what is today will not be tomorrow in medicine or any other field.

You may have a talent for art and design but you don’t have the passion. It’s wise to choose an easier path. Pursuing a passion is something many artists have to do. Art is not a choice for most successful artists. It’s like choosing to breathe oxygen or not.

There are no wasted degrees if they help you develop towards your passion. The only wasted degree is a degree in something you hate. By the way, I know a graphic designer that has earned $6 million over the last 7 years. She made as an entrepreneur. Her million dollar career began when a large design company bought her graphic design business.

And remember, nobody’s adding the entrepreneur’s stats to the research you’ve done.

Wow, I honestly had no idea. Thanks it seems that you have shed a little light on my quest. As of right now, I really want to pursue art because it really is my passion(been drawing since I was 8) and I’m still figuring out what to major in college, however I will take what you’ve said into consideration, thank you
