Hey everyone i'm a new member and i'm looking to get some advice for taking the SAT's. I'm entering my senior year of high school and i need a really high score to get into the college i want to go to. i want/need at least a 1800+. i took the SAT's in May 2012 and i got around the mid 1200's with absolutely no studying or prep. i was thinking about taking the Small Instruction Class by the Princeton Review for $1499. is that a good class to take? i need feedback, thanks.

IMO, that seems quite expensive for an SAT preparation class (since there are cheaper alternatives, like buying a Princeton Review book and studying from it). But if you want to take that class, go for it.

Collegeboard official bluebook + barrons/kaplan CR (I like barrons vocab) wbook + barrons writing wbook + something’s math (idk b/c I’ve never had trouble with math, but I’ve heard Dr. Chung’s around a lot) + PR 11 practice tests + lots of determination = at least 2k.

If you’re stuck on time, leave out the subject-specific workbooks and work directly from the blue book. But definitely use the PR for practice. Oh and check out as many practice tests for SAT as you can from public library from any company that’s reasonably wellknown (kaplan, mcgrawhill, barrons, PR), do the sections for practice.

NOTE do not time yourself while using PR/stuff other than bluebook, just do the sections independently for practice. ALWAY ALWAYS ALWAYSSS check why u get answers wrong. And you can also search through CC for MANY MANY MANY threads on how to improve SAT scores.

Do not by any means sign up for that review class. The instructors will most likely be inexperienced and inept at helping you, for the most part. If you look into CC enough you might find some old threads by xiggi/etc. talking about classes.

Right, I may be biased about that^ since my dad says classes are too expensive so I can’t go and thus I’ve hated them with a passion, but general CC consensus does say no classes, so yeah.

You may want to read my article “Should You Take a Prep Course for SAT Math?” It’s posted on this forum - just do a search.

does it matter if it’s volume 4 or 1?

I don’t think the volume matters much. However, this thread is just as good as any book for the essay:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/645763-how-write-12-essay-just-10-days.html

UserStudent: That’s not volume 4, that’s 4h edition
There are only two volumes for Direct Hits, I think…
But just using one should improve your score by an unbelievable.

PRACTICE IS IMPORTANT. And review any questions you missed and try to understand why they are wrong.

If you’re motivated to do work, I guess the class should help. But then again, I’ve never took a prep class and got 1800+

You can definitely achieve an 1800+ with about 2 months of preparation.

If you really want a study plan and practice questions, just PM me, I’d be glad to help you.
