Need match schools for not-so-hot GPA but perfect SAT?

No, sorry if I wasn’t clear about what I meant. Michigan counts an A+, A, and A- equally as an A = 4.0; they count B+, B, and B- equally as a B = 3.0, and so on. Just strip out the pluses and minuses and assign a whole integer value to it, and recalculate the overall GPA on that basis. The “3.5” I mentioned is what you’d get if you’re averaging just two grades, one in the A range (A+, A, or A-), and one in the B range (B+, B, or B-).

When they report that 28% of their entering class has a (recalculated) GPA of 4.0, that has to mean that cohort got no grade lower than A-, since even a single B+ (counted as a B = 3.0) would bring the overall GPA below 4.0.

Clear enough?

hey guys

hate to be a bother but could you take a look at this list and lemme know if this is reaching too high?

1) Yale
2) Brown
3) Wash U in St. Louis
4) UC Berkely
5) Stanford
6) Vassar
7) UNC - Chapel Hill
8) William & Mary
9) Univ. of Washington
10) Boston University

I’m thinking that if U of W is a safety and maybe BU is a nice low-match… then I can afford to just reach reach reach? Are any of these schools likely to take me if I’ve got my sweet lil 2400 and can deliver extraordinary essays and recs and extracurriculars? or will one look at my silly little 4.8/6.0 scale just dissolve any hope of getting in?

AHHH!
PANIC ATTACK!

lol, not really, just… ya know. this is not the most lovely experience, but the adrenaline is nice.

I think it’s a plan for disaster. You need more matches.

gah. helpppppp! :'(

seriously worried now, guys. help? please?

anyone? bump?

Have you tried this:

[College MatchMaker - Type of School](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Plug in your info, it suggests schools. You can play around with it for hours.

Ok, Calm down. Do as vosson suggests, but plug in a lower SAT score [ 1950-2000] that is the equivalent of your grade point ratio [4.8 on a scale of 6.0]. That should give you some matches and safeties. You DO need more matches and safeties that you would LOVE to go to. I suggest you just pick a couple of reaches tha have the programs you want , just in case lady luck smiles on you!

Alright. Revised list:

Yale (not going to get rid of this one, despite the odds :P)

WashU in St. Louis

Stanford

Berkely

NYU

BU

University of Washington - Seattle

Syracuse U

Rice U

UT Austin

Need help with 8,9,10. Really not impressed by anything the collegeboard search came up with :-/ I’m looking for a top notch school. And I know that’s kind of shooting high but when I applied to boarding school I applied only to what I considered the top 3, and got into all of them. And I just feel like, if I can’t go to the best school for me…

Rice is harder to get into than BU. It IS a top notch school , just so you know. And what school/ program are you applying to at Berkeley? UCB is VERY hard to get into OOS, especially for those applying to programs such as Haas or engineering. You need to give us specifics about subject areas/ majors you are interested in , preferred location/ climate/ size of undergraduate population, etc, in order to get some responses that might help

Location: prefer not to be in the East as I’ve spent basically 4 years here already, but not at the cost of getting a “lesser” education (i mean that in the least snobbish way possible.) so, WashU and other really awesome places in non-Eastern locations are great.

Climate: again, don’t really care but preferably not any worse than Boston weather.

Size: medium, bigger than 2,500 but small enough that classes aren’t all in lecture halls

ECs: a debate team would be awesome

Extras: a gorgeous library is a must

Majors: English - Writing, Business, Anthropology

And I know Rice is harder, the list isn’t really in order except for Yale being at the top, haha. Rice is just an iffy one cause i’ve never visited and thus don’t really know if I love it or not… I know it’s an excellent school.

Thanks for your advice, menloparkmom and everyone, I really appreciate your help!

Anything else?

Well except for Business[ though they do have one of the best Economics depts in the country] you are describing U of Chicago!

Climate: again, don’t really care but preferably not any worse than Boston weather.-Chicago is about the same.

Size: medium, bigger than 2,500 but small enough that classes aren’t all in lecture halls- Chicago has 4000 undergrads and a student/ teacher ratio of 4-1.Classes are highly interactive- you CAN’T hide form the profs in your classes.

ECs: a debate team would be awesome- chicago has one of the best in the country

Extras: a gorgeous library is a must- wait until you see the HUGE!!! library there!

Majors: English - Writing, Anthropology - again- one of the best colleges for these areas!

!!! Menloparkmom, you rock !

Do you know the acceptance rate there by any chance?

It’s going down, but I believe it’s still above 30%[??]. Chicago is a different U than most colleges[ Reed, Columbia and Swarthmore have a similar academic “feel”. It is HIGHLY academic and is known as one of the toughest colleges in the US,[ it has the “core”, which takes up essentially your first 2 years of college, so you will get a broad based liberal arts education whether you want it or not!] and is it’s grade deflation is well known in academic circles. You will not have the typical “Big U” college experiences there, so it is NOT the right college for most students. But you WILL graduate from Chicago knowing how to THINK!Chicago graduates are highly thought of in the business world and by graduate schools.
Applicants have a tendancy to “self select”. It doesn’t have the huge #'s of students applying there, or as low an acceptance rate as colleges that are considered in the academic world to be Chicago’s equals[ HYPS, ]. Students tend to not apply to Chicago unless they are passionate about learning, ABOVE ALL ELSE. It ends to attract a large # of smart, passionate and somewhat “quirky” students.

The KEY to acceptance there [ given your grades/ starts are in range] is your essays! Even though Chicago has “caved” and will accept the Common app starting this year, they still have supplemental essays that are reminiscent of their “quirky” Uncommon App essay prompts of years past. Most students who apply loved the application- it did help to pre sort out those that would appreciate the “quirky” intellectual bend of Chicago.
Here’s a link to the admissions website. Have fun! I suggest you also wander over to the Chicago forum for more questions you may have. Most posters there are very helpful.
