Need Match Schools

S18 is forming a list of schools to apply to. He has a 31 ACT (taking it once with a cast on his dominant hand) but we expect that to go up with some prep and more sittings. Unweighted gpa 4.0. Ranks 3 / 225. Has 5 APS, will take 4 more APS next year. Rest of classes are Honors level. Plenty of leadership type ECs. No hooks. Reach schools are Vanderbilt, WashU and Notre Dame. Safety schools are Indiana University, Ohio State and Miami OH. Need some comfortable match schools. Looking within two or 3 states in any direction feom Ohio. Thoughts? Thanks!

Your son’s tentative academic interests?

I wish he knew, but he doesn’t. He has a lot of academic interests, but leans more toward business or pre law as opposed to something science oriented. But that is as far as we’ve been able to narrow it down. Also should have mentioned he prefers mid to large size schools with proximity to cities.

He’ll have lots of options. One or both of URochester or CWRU could suit him well though.

You can run the Supermatch tool on the left side of this page.

For pre-law or pre-business (or simply well-rounded colleges), these sites can be interesting to read through (though the included schools would generally be regarded as reaches for most students):

Keep in mind that going pre-law isn’t necessarily the best thing.

@philbegas : “Pre-law” was intended very generally in post #5. Most of those schools do not offer pre-law majors.

Fair enough! @merc81

@philbegas I’m with you on that. I am a lawyer and I have tried to talk him out of going down that path!

@merci81 yes I meant pre law in a general sort of way. He probably wouldn’t major in pre law per se but something like poli sci or economics.

We’ve done Super Match, as it is connected to his Naviance account, but he’s not so enthusiastic about the results it generates.

If he likes big cities, and he has no idea what he wants to do then he should pick schools that have a diversity of degrees. LACs won’t have business schools, so the closest thing to it that he can do is economics (generally speaking).

Lehigh, Pitt, Penn State, F&M

Is University of Minnesota too far?

Depauw as a safety and Lehigh and Bucknell as matches. Not sure if they are too small though, but all seem lively and spirited with big Greek life. Scratch Bucknell, it’s not near a city.

I second Lehigh, Case Western and U Rochester. Maybe U Michigan, William & Mary, U Richmond?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! We will take a look at all of those schools.
