Need more Benjamins

I'm an international student and was accepted to Middlebury ED2. My questions are:

1) How does Midd dispatch acceptance packages for internationals (DHL, regular mail...)?

2) I wanted to know if I could get Middlebury to increase my aid...here is what I got:

Fund Amount
Middlebury College Job 1800
Middlebury College Grant 49320
Middlebury College Loan 1000
Total 52120

Though this is a hefty amount, I have no means of getting the money for books ($1000) and personal expenses ($1000). Do you think they will give me an additional $2000 grant if I asked?

Thanks in advance for replies.

Can I just ask if you are somehow working now in order to save money or does wherever you are from prohibit that. Our son works in the summer to save up his money for expenses and books during the year.

I could work in the summer but I won’t be able to make more than 50 dollars…sad, I know. The exchange rate is 17 Ethiopian Birr to 1 USD.

is that for your first year or per year/

either way, congrats.

Holy cow, that is a phenomenal aid package. Only 1k in loans! No, I don’t expect they
would want to give you any more money. You’re expected to pick up at least a little of the cost.

I hope you’re not considering turning this package down! It’s sounds really generous. For books and personal expenses, you could probably either increase the loan amount a bit and/or try to work more (either on or off campus). Also you may be able to find/share used books and live really cheaply… you really won’t need to buy any food at Midd, but what about travel expenses to and from Ethiopia? I know some students stay at Midd over breaks and have host families in the area. I hope you can work it out.

Many American families take out loans to pay for their education. There is no reason why you cannot take a loan to cover your other expenses. Your financial aid package is simply phenomenal.

One possible reason is that in can be difficult for an international to find a lender. I would explain your situation to the FA office and see if there might work study available.

sidrak, by all means talk to the FA office at Midd and tell them your situation. My guess is that they’ll do everything they can to make this work and get you to campus. Even if they won’t raise your grant by $2000, perhaps they will increase your work/study job by $1000 and give you $1000 more in loans. Still a heck of a deal. This is a fantastic opportunity. Good luck!

Congratulations on a fantastic financial aid package! Travel to and from Middlebury is expensive, and we live in the U.S. S most often buys used books… there is a great used bookstore in the town of Middlebury. You have a wonderful opportunity to learn from and interact with great professors. However, there is a discrepancy between those who ‘have’ and those who don’t.

the package is per year. As for traveling to and from Ethiopia my parents could pay for that. I guess I will talk to the FA office and see what happens. I know it’s a great package but 2,000USD=34,000 Ethiopian Birr…and that’s a lot.
Thanks for the responses.
Anymore thoughts…what’s the answer for question 1?

Greennblue, it’s not that I don’t want to contribute anything for covering the educational costs…it’s because I can’t. Here in my country I have already gotten a full ride (absolutely no costs or loans) to a top notch (by Ethiopian standards) university.

Can the Ethiopian government give you any loan or aid? Some countried do. Anyway, talk to the local bank and Midd. Midd will open much more doors for you than any Ehiopian university can.

Is this guy on drugs

^^^
I am sorry I gave you that impression. I am not repudiating the generosity of the aid package I was offered; however, $2,000x4 would wholly drain my parents of their savings.

well what do you think 50,000 + X 4 does for those of us who will not receive such a generous aid package. I’m sure you will be able to pay them back very soon after graduation and getting that great job.
