Need more match and safety engineering schools!

You might get into any of those. I would say all are within reach. Be sure to spell Johns Hopkins correctly on your application. They are proud of their S.

Why Brown?

Oops haha. And it’s still a good engineering school even though they aren’t known for it.

^ I know, DS was admitted there.

Nice, congrats! Now that i’ve narrowed my list down to about 15, what other factors could narrow it down even further?

“The Virginia engineers I know send their kids to Virginia Tech for engineering over UVa.”

Not all. My husband is an engineer and my older kid went to UVa, the younger one to Virginia Tech, both in engineering. Older kid just felt UVa was a better fit for him. They are both great schools, both well recruited . Can’t go wrong with either.

Anyone think they could help me narrow down my list?

https://secure.hosting.vt.edu/www.finaid.vt.edu/apply/aid_estimator.php</a> indicates a net price of about $14,000 per year, which is probably a stretch for a family with income of $49,999 or less. The Alabama automatic merit scholarship leaves a few thousand dollars less net price, which means that it would still be a stretch. That means that the OP needs an automatic full ride for a safety (e.g. Howard, Louisiana Tech, Prairie View A&M).

However, a student needing a lot of financial aid may find UVA to have a more affordable net price than VT.

Thanks for the input ucbalumnus. Also saw a scholarship for Bama for first-gen students. Not automatic, but also an extra 5K/year.

[Lafayette College Admissions Information - CollegeData College Profile](http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg02_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=799) indicates that Lafayette considers “level of applicant’s interest” in admissions. Therefore, it should not be considered a safety.

For reach schools, what about MIT and Stanford?

You can also try for various full ride merit scholarships like Park at NCSU.

I didn’t even consider MIT or stanford because of their admissions. I just don’t think my profile is good enough. Do you really think i would have a shot? Same with the full ride at NC State.

The other schools in your reach list would also be very reachy with your scores. Try a retake of both the SAT and ACT this fall after doing test-specific preparation (although the SAT subject tests might be a problem at highly selective schools that want to see them).

I will be taking all three again this fall… I’m anticipating a huge jump in subject test and SAT, minor jump in ACT. Even then, I want to narrow down my reach list. Lafayette and Tufts are eliminated off my list

I think your list is fine.

I think VTech is a safety and a fine one at that.

They are too big to be rejecting 3.9/32-ACT in state kids.

Financially, it may be too much of a stretch to be a safety, based on its net price calculator result. A safety must be affordable.

I’m set with my matches and safeties, really just trying to narrow down my reach list.

Updated List:

Reaches:
MIT (worth applying?)
Stanford
Cornell (need to raise SAT II’s)
Northwestern
John Hopkins
Duke
UPenn
Vanderbilt
Brown

Match-Reach:
UVA

Matches:
Virginia Tech
Lehigh

Safeties:
University of Alabama
Lousiana Tech

I’m hoping that it’s almost guaranteed that I’m accepted to Vtech! Won’t be as affordable as some of the private schools though so we’ll see.
