I'm not bringing a car mainly b/c I don't have one and can't afford one after seeing how much Duke is gonna cost me, but from what I've heard, its not really necessary. There's buses that run from east to west and back during days of classes and there's always a trusty bike :). I dunno if parking is gonna be a problem though, cuz it is at many schools.

i didn't have a car first year, and i'm toying with the possibility of bringing one next year, although i'm thinking that i wont. because freshmen are allowed to have cars, chances are, you're going to have at least one friend who has a car. i had a few, as well as a friend who considered himself the worst driver on earth, so he'd let anyone borrow his car so long as they bought him a present of some sorts (i had to buy him cigars!). driving from east --> west for class is a very stupid idea because parking at duke is pretty convoluted. on east, you'll have a Red Zone parking permit. upperclassmen on West have Blue Zones. you can only park where your color zone is, and i'm not sure where there's any Red Zones on West. at night it is handy-- that's when i'd borrow a car if i needed to do something quickly on west, like go to a sorority meeting or get a book at perkins, because at night, you can park anywhere. parking tickets can get very expensive at duke, but on east, you should be able to park (close to your dorm) whenever you need.

i survived quite well without a car, though. whenever i needed to get somewhere like a drug store or to make a target run, someone was always willing to take me. seriously-- even people whom you're not that good of friends with will be very helpful if you're sick and need to go to Rite Aid. otherwise, you'll probably have a friend with a car even if you don't bring one; my feelings are if you're bringing a car, you don't mind like driving out to dinner or to the mall or something social off campus.

I did have a car last year and I think it made things a lot easier for me. Parking is very good on east as the lots are all close to dorms with a lot on room. Id recommend bringing one if you can youll get use out of it.

Thanks for replies all!!

CaptainM, when did you use your car mostly?

I used it to go to southpoint mall. I used it every friday and saturday night to go get food at different restaurants between durham and chapel hill. I also used it to go on alcohol runs. I used it to go to west in the evenings whenever I happened to need to go cuz theres alot of parking there on weekends and evenings.

is it a good idea to buy a used car once i get htere?

dreaming, I dunno about that I definately didnt know ne one who bought a car once they got down there so I just dunno,
