Need opinion on Chapel Hill, Ithaca, Dominion..

I know I have a 6 page thread going around but I didn't want to clog everything up on one thread.

Someone from this board has reccomended me the following colleges and I've looked into them. I just want some opinions being that the colleges are not in my area. Information as far as how hard is it to get in (for an out of stater), academics, diversity, campus life and etc. Oh yea, its communication program.

University Of North Carolina: Chapel Hill
Northwestern
Ithaca
University Of Florida
University Of Miami
Old Dominion
Virginia Commonwealth

ANY information would be appreciated.

Miami is not hard to get into OOS. They have about 1/2 their students coming in OOS.

I know that UNC and UF are incredibly hard to get into OOS, ESPECIALLY UNC. There were students with 1470s that were getting rejected OOS, with 4.0 GPAs here on CC last year.

Both schools discriminate against OOS students. All Publics do. Privates to a lesser extent.

Basically, for Florida and UNC, you have to be in the top 25% of their scores to have a chance. Florida only accepts like 8% of their students OOS, it's ridiculous. UNC has quotas established limiting OOS students.

I can help you with ODU and VCU. If you go to www.collegeboard.com it has the stats on getting in. As for either of them they are not THAT hard to get into. ODU is often regarded as a safety school. ODU is in Norfolk, Va which is a city but not too bad. The campus is pretty spread out and, in my opinion, not all that pretty. VCU is in Richmond, Va. It has a true urban, artsy vibe. Its defenitely city. If you're into city, arts, cultural, music thing you'd love it. I thinkof ODU as sort of a watery version of VCU, but a lot of poeple would disagree with me on that. I can't tell you about communications at either, I'm sorry. If you have any more questions about them just ask and I'll be happy to answer!

Thanks A2wolves for clarifying that. Im trying to eliminate schools and I have enough reaches as it is.

illnevergetin, so you would say that VCU is known to be the better school? Do you know of out of state students that got accepted to VCU?

Santo - definitely eliminate Florida and UNC then. You've got a better shot at some lower-level ivies and good privates OOS than those schools.

Yea, you're right. Thanks.

You're from Michigan right? What you think of Michigan State University?

The first 5 schools on Your list (ie: u of miami, UF, Ithaca etc.) are more competetive and than VCU and OD. I wouldn't forget them, I would research them if I were you.

If you're looking at Virginia schools think about Virginia Tech. Better college and academic experience than VCU and ODU. The former is a very urban campus in a city, Richmond, I don't particularly care for. VT though is very rural and not especially diverse, but it has great school spirit, a good looking campus (built with "Hokie" stone from their own quarry) and some strong engineering and business programs.

I've visited Ithaca so I can help you with that one. It's in Ithaca, NY (obviously lol). Very gorgeous campus. Overlooks one of the finger lakes and they have this nice little pond on campus. I liked the location. Kind of suburban, there's a small little town right down the road, but further there are also malls and restaurants, etc. Communications is one of the most popular majors at Ithaca so that's good for you. When I visited they were giving specific tours for the communications people. I didn't go on this tour so I couldn't tell you anything more about communications. About 6500 students, small classes, the people there all seemed nice when I went. Dorms were alright. They have a very strong theater program. Well that's about all I can remember, hope this helped.

shiningstar17, I know the business dept. has been their weakest dept. It recently got accredited by a business accrediting assoc. (aacsb), so is that dept. getting better (if you know)?

Santo, you may want to forget about UNC-chapel Hill bcs it is soooo difficult to gain admissions from oos.

northeastmom: I'm no expert on Ithaca College but I lokked over some of the things I picked up during my visit and the business department seems good to me, although I'm not planning on majoring in business. They have an entire school of business and a wide range of concentrations within that school from international business to marketing and management. They also seem to offer some great internships for their business students with companies like JP Morgan, GAP, Baush and lomb, Comcast, etc. They emphasize real world business and it seems like there would be a lot of hands on experience. Hope this helped you.

Yea northeast mom, I scratched out UNC and UF.

Still thinking about Northwestern. I got enough reaches and colleges to apply to already (NE, BU, Emerson, Syracuse).

What about Michigan?

Ive heard extremely good things about Michigan State. U know about it slipper?

Thanks shiningstar. I think the biz school is changing for the better, but was not sure.

I have visited VCU and DIDN'T like it. The area was very seedy and run down. However, they did have a number of friendly people who wanted to "releave me" of my spare change. You need to visit the school to see if you get the same impression.

Univ of Miami is great. Lots of fine weather ( other than the occasional hurricane), fabulous looking students, beautiful campus, very knowledgable and happy professors (for the most part), great library, and some of the best school spirit around. Frankly, with Univ of Miami Football and even basketball, how can you not have school spirit? There are lots of clubs, and a plethora of majors, akin to that of a large state university.Advising is very good, although it may vary on the advisor. Miami also gives a slight preference, from what I have seen, to their undergraduates for professional schools such as Law, Medical etc. Overall, this would be a good choice. I can't speak for the other schools since I have not seen them.

Miami also has a very good endowment that allows for some good merit and need based aid. In fact, Miami tries hard to recruit top kids with need based aid.

shrug I guess I'm the person who suggested to you these schools.

Um, the best thing I could suggest is just searching outright. You want diversity? Pride? Athletics? PR provides the rankings for that.

Come back with another list and maybe you'll find some keepers.

LOL, you hear that A2Wolves6? They're asking ME, a biased kid from Ann Arbor about Michigan State!

No, actually, tons of kids from Ann Arbor go to MSU because they can't get into Michigan. It's the second-tier, party school, with VERY solid academics. They are known for their agriculture programs. We razz them, telling them to go "milk a cow". Have a great study abroad program.

Everyone I know that has gone there has loved it. My mother transferred there from Michigan and said it was the best decision of her life. She didn't like the academic stuck-up "i'm better than you" vibe she got at Michigan. Would rather riot and burn down the town when the basketball team wins, or loses.

It's a very nice school, but they can't win football games unless they cheat and stop the clock when it should be running, giving them extra plays.

UMich is obviously much harder to get into, and is much more academic than MSU. State also is located in the captial, so you basically are surrounded by politics if that's your thing. State has a fantastic B-Ball team, made the final four. Both schools have good school spirit.

VCU is generally seen as the better school out of ODU and VCU. Only about 9% of their students are out-of-state. I don't know if thats because there are so many students in the school and that 9% is a generally large number or if they genually only let 9% be from out of state or if not that many out of staters apply. Its most popular major is mass communications/ media studies. I agree that you should look into VA Tech (about 29% of its students are OOS and one of its most popular majors is communications) but I don't know if you're into the HUGE college town thing, as in- if its not happening at the college its not happening. but besides all that, its a really big school with spirit. I ALSO reccomend one of my most favorite schools ever- James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. ABout 30% of its student body is OOS and its most popular major is communications, with a good grad degree in it too. I LOVE this school, the people are sooo nice and the food is great its lots of fun. Its a medium sized school with the comforts of country and city. And they were the football champs last year haha. Sorry, I embelish when it comes to JMU :) Let me know if you need any more info

SQUEEEE! I want JMU! :(

I love those people. I asked like one question and everyone came running to help! :)
