Need Opinions on an Appeal...

Hi everyone. I was accepted into UCSD as a transfer student from a community college, but I've just been canceled.

The main reason is that my GPA is too low. I thought it was above 3.0, but since they only count transferable classes, it dropped to a 2.991. I just got the notice 2 days ago, and I've already contacted admissions. They can only suggest an appeal.

I've already registered for fall classes and got a dorm too, so this late notice comes as a real shock. I've even been buying the things I'll need to bring to my dorm.

To be honest, I have no extenuating circumstances. I was interested in chemistry and biology, but I had no interest in becoming a pharmacist (what my parents wanted). I took a bunch of chem and bio and got a few C's which brought my GPA down considerably. I have, however, firmly decided that I want to major in computer science. I have a fairly solid background in related subjects, such as CSS, HTML, BASIC, Flash, Actionscript, etc. I've written a complete appeal that I'd like appreciate some feedback on.

If you're interested, please send me a PM and I'll send you my rough draft which I just wrote today. I don't want to make it too public and post the whole thing, I hope you understand.

The good background you mention better include all of the computer science prerequisites or you have no chance whatsoever. I’m not knowledgeable on appeals, but I’m sure that if you were accepted, you’d be accepted only to UCSD and no particular major. I don’t know the situation of computer science at UCSD personally, but if it’s in any way impacted, expect a minimum required gpa of above 3.0 to be even considered for it.

It’s not impacted at all, but I’ve also taken no computer science prerequisites…I’ve finished IGETC though, so I have practically no GE’s that I need to take.

I guess things aren’t looking too good…

For engineering majors, which Comp Sci falls under, they take into account the Pre Reqs more than anything and they actually suggest not to follow IGETC. They do this because even if you finish all the pre reqs–2 years of math, 1.5 years of physics, 1 semester of general chem, and whatever comp sci classes–it still takes the average transfer student 2.5-3 years to finish most engineering majors.

I am sorry to ask questions in your thread but your situation is very similar to mine and I am planning to apply this Fall.
I also have 3.0 GPA and have exactly 30 units so I am plan to apply for TAG.
Were you apply UCSD via TAG? If so, when did they reply back to you. You see I don’t want to waste my time apply for the real application in the November if I know I didn’t get in via TAG.
But unfortunately for me, my major is Mechanical Engineering and it is impacted at UCSD.

So I am pondering whether I should stay another year or not. I also behind my pre-reqs. My hope is not high for TAG, but if I do get in, it is a different matter. It would be more complicated.

Andrew2: Not to discourage your appeal process or anything, but I would really start thinking of and considering plan B at this point. UCSD is a stickler when it comes to appeals, and their admissions department has no heart for applicants/admits. They see every person as just another number among the thousands. They’ve been known to never overturn their decision/cancellation unless the reasons for the grade-drops is extremely compelling. I had a situation similar to yours, spent ~30 hours on an appeal letter, only to have it rejected after having waited 2 weeks for a decision.

I would appeal into for a major in which you fulfilled lots of pre-reqs for or some super non-impacted majored. That would give you the best shot of being accepted.

I don’t think they would take you as a compsci major if you didn’t take any pre-reqs. Even if they did, you would have to start at a freshman level and they would probably tell you instead to just stay at your CC.

Good luck with things though.

Appealing to UCSD over GPA seems really really hard. My gpa was 0.04 below the cutoff and appealed mentioning that I had a difficult family situation - they said this was not compelling information lol. For the most part I found the UCSD admissions reps pretty repulsive through my communications with them regarding admisions, unfortunately.

They aren’t really worth the trouble anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys. I don’t have a plan B unfortunately, especially not this late in the game. Everywhere has already pretty much decided who their students will be.

I’ll submit my appeal tomorrow and hope for the best. It couldn’t hurt to try…

If it doesn’t go through, do you know if I can spend the next year bringing up my grades and re-applying and TAGing?

I was about to say, you absolutely should send off that thing!

What’s your GPA right now? You could always try to TAG into something you meet the requirements for I guess :)

You can pull your GPA up this year and reapply with TAG, but that would mean another 2 years at community college. You should apply without TAG this fall. You could also sign a TAG to other UCs with a 2.9 or lower cutoff GPA.

my GPA is 2.991. I’ve read and re-read the appeal - it’s as good as it’s going to get. Totally different than your normal appeal, but it’s all I’ve got without any BS.
