This is a heads up since its quite a long post.. appreciate it for the people who take the time to read this and give me their opinons..

Okay.. so I attended Purdue my freshman year and took out a 30k in loans during the fall and spring semester. Most of this was Stafford/Perkins/Parents PLUS loans. Then I took summer classes and took out a private loan for $10,000. So my first year my loans totalled to $40k not including the interest rate...

After getting a fin. aid package that gave me barely any aid with loans totalling to $32k for this current fall and upcoming spring semester... I decided to go to another school that would allow me to pursue the major I wanted to since 7th grade since Purdues faculty in the program I had interest were of no help to me...

I applied to Johnson and Wales and got almost $16k in grants and scholarships so my loan for this year is $14k. I came here mainly because of finances since Purdue wouldve put me in a debt of $150k or more when I graduate. However... since coming here I've been very very depressed and thought of things I shouldnt do since the social life has been very harsh on me... Having a terrible high school experience just made me compare it from then till now even though I promised myself to never think of HS again.. and yes it was that bad...

I want to consider transferring but my parents are both unemployed and my dad is disabled and was disabled since 4 years ago... The rents are having a hard time getting by also with all the bills they have to pay.. This situation doesnt put me in a good spot since I was rejected from sallie mae for a loan of 35k when i applied during the summer for the fall semester. However if I chose the parent PLUS loan, my parents would have to be paying double the monthly payments they are paying now. however as i said.. they cant afford it.. I want to go back to Purdue but I doubt theyd change my aid package.. also the other schools I want to go to are similiar to Purdue such as Mich. St., Florida St., Penn. St. so i was wondering what people think about my situation and what they'd do..

It sounds like ALL of the schools to which you are applying are OUT OF STATE publics for you. Have you considered an instate public universityin the state in which you reside? Your costs would be significantly less than those at a school that requires you to pay out of state tuition.

I will venture some free advice. This student needs to find a school and STAY THERE. The transferring has to end. At some point, there is the potential to lose credits and therefore take longer to complete a program. Every school has its own criteria for accepting transfer credits. Some accept only courses that they also offer. Some accept only a certain NUMBER of credits. Some will accept the credits but will not apply anything in your major towards graduation.

JWU has FOUR campuses. The OP is not happy at the one he was at. He was not happy at his first college (due to money issues). He now says that the other JWU campuses are not diverse enough for consideration. Personally, I think if this student wants to not have a lot more debt, and wants to get his schooling DONE, he should either stay put in Providence or transfer to another of the JWU campuses. BUT that is my opinion.

There are a LOT of schools that offer hospitality programs. U of South Carolina, as I mentioned earlier, offers one…and prices even for OOS students are good.

Hmm… I didn’t know that SC had a low OOS tuition. I should check into that also. I believe that Cornell’s Hotel Administration School has really good aid since my parents income is below 15k a year. It’s going to be tough transferring to Cornell since I was rejected when I applied in HS for ED. Kinda scared to be honest, but depending on how my GPA ends up I may apply to Cornell.
