Need Rating & Advice

Thanks in advance for reading this thread. If it isn’t too much to ask, I would like a few people to rate me and give me a few suggestions as to other schools that I may like or may suit me. Overall, although I may know of the top schools, I would also like to hear some suggestions for smaller schools that are great as well.

[High School Profile]

When reflecting back on my early high school years, I believe that my academic performance was horrible. However, as the years progressed, I seem to be slowly improving and obtaining an interest in learning. Nonetheless, my sophomore year seems to be what will be the end of me.

{GPAs & Rankings}

I’m actually not sure how GPAs work for private colleges. The GPAs listed below are for only my sophomore and junior years since the UCs only look at those years prior to admissions. Is this the same for private colleges as well?

Unweighted GPA: 3.14
UC GPA: 3.68

Class Ranking: 194 out of 657 students

[Test Scores]

{SAT I (SAT Reasoning Test)}

Critical Reading: 660
Math: 690
Writing: 630
Total: 1980

**My SAT I test score so far is a bit low. I have retaken it two weeks ago and am waiting for the results. The results are to be released on the 25th of October so for now, I have posted these scores. However, as a side note, I am sure that I’ve obtained a perfect score for the math section this time.

{SAT II (SAT Subject Test)}

Chemistry: 750
Mathematics Level 2: 800

**I am planning to take the SAT II US History exam this December in order to have a third SAT II score. Although it may not be accurate to say this but I believe I’ll obtain around a 750-800.

{AP Exams}

AP Chemistry: 4
AP World History: 3
AP Statistics: 4
AP U.S. History: 4

[Extracurricular Activities]

-I am member of the Academic Decathlon team at my school. If it makes any difference, our school makes it to state almost all the time.
-During my nutrition and lunch periods, I tutor my peers in our school’s study center for community service hours. I’m not sure if it makes a difference but I chose to work for hours rather than payment.
-I am a part of an environmentalist group/community service group called the Pacific American Volunteer Association (PAVA). It’s mainly run by students and I’ve held a few leadership roles in the organization. I’ve been awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
-I’ve been playing the traditional Korean drums for almost three years now. I’ve performed twice at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood as well as at other minor events with students from the UCLA Korean drumming club.
-Practiced Kendo during my sophomore and junior years. However, I had to stop since other things have been getting in the way.
-I read to the blind a few times a month. I mainly read to a blind chemist but I’ve had the opportunity to read to Laura Huxley (The wife of Aldous Huxley) too. The books and magazines I read are related to science.
-I study botany under an ex-Stanford lecturer. (Mind you, not a professor. :3)

[College List]

Intended Major: Biochemistry or any biology related major. Interested in a pre-medicine program.

The list of colleges below is not my final list. Yes, I am well aware that not all the colleges below are realistic choices for me. I am hoping to get a reasonable and sensible final list of colleges which I will apply to by consulting you guys! Thanks again.

Colleges with an *asterisk infront of them denotes that I plan on applying to those schools no matter what. The two schools that I am dying to attend are Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins. Do I have any chance for those two schools?

Amherst College
Boston College
*Boston University
Brown University
Bucknell University
California Institute of Technology
Carnegie Mellon University
College of William and Mary
Columbia University: Columbia College

Again, if you guys have any other suggestions, please tell me!

Wish you luck on the last SAT I. SAT II is fine.
GPA (Which derives into class rank) is going to matter everywhere you go. You are extremely lacking in that department.
You seem to have some nice things that you do when you talk about them, but they seem rather weak on paper.
I really wish you luck with your application to top 20 since that GPA will be a MAJOR hinder. (Not even in top 25% of class, but I am pretty sure you test scores are way beyond top 25% of your class)
I don’t know much about UC, but in my crude opinion; you have no chance at Stanford and Johns Hopkins with that kind of GPA. Your test scores are qualified if you just raise that SAT I up a bit, aim a bit lower, perhaps to the 40th rank range.

Edit: you might consider writing your essay on your transformation from a disinterested student into that is eager (heh) to learn; perhaps some kind of explanation from counselor about GPA.

I figured so.. my applying to Stanford is more like “the hell of it”. However, Johns Hopkins is a different story >_< What do you guys think about Notre Dame as an option for me? And also, do private colleges receive my first semester senior grades in time for evaluation? If so, do they factor into my class rank/GPA?

Also, can I get a few suggestions for safety schools and schools that fit me? More critics would be nice too!

JHU/Notre Dame = High Reach

You might consider writing your essay on your transformation from a disinterested student into that is eager (heh) to learn; perhaps some kind of explanation from counselor about GPA.

Yes, your senior year first semester matters as most schools requires midyear report. If you get straight A, it will impress.

Hey I’m Korean too! (which is why it’s krnpsychopath)

Your GPA isn’t high enough buddy and I’m gonna guess at best you’re gonna score a 2100 on the SAT.

Drop the Ivies, Duke, MIT, and Caltech from your list, and don’t hope for anything from Stanford.

Johns Hopkins is a reach level school for you, but I think if your SAT I score comes out 2100+ and you write some amazing essays, you have a decent shot (not great mind you) at acceptance. Best of luck!

Unfortunately, I agree with sinistercharity. Most of the schools on your list are reaches.

You may want to check out Goucher, which has a very good pre-med reputation. It’s just outside Baltimore and offers cross-registration with Hopkins.

Beloit, Cornell College, Kalamazoo, Lawrence U, Allegheny, Case Western, U Rochester, Northeastern, and Tulane are also reasonable matches.

Holy Cross-Top30 LAC near Boston- has a very good pre-med program. Holy Cross is building a $60 million addition to its science facilities. HC is also SAT optional.

Ahh please don’t say anything such as “sorry” x] I’m expecting constructive criticism anyways! :D

I’ve decided to apply to Tulane because they’ve been sending me e-mails all along asking me to apply. For some reason, I was skeptical because they were spamming me so much.. but since they have no essay, it seems like a good place to apply to.

Anyways, here is a revised list. Can someone please “chance me” on the schools listed below? Also, do I need more “safety” schools?

I’ve removed all colleges that sinisterclarity has mentioned. Please suggest away more colleges! Goucher College recommended by warblersrule86 has interested me.

Bump Can someone please chance me for:

Boston University
University of Washington
UC San Diego
California State University San Luis Obispo

Holy Cross (45 minutes west of Boston) has an excellent record in preparing students for the health professions. Graduates are admitted to medical school at a rate twice the national average, and more than 10 percent of Holy Cross alumni are currently practicing medicine.

Hmm yes. After reading about the college it sounds really nice. I’m going to apply there for sure! I’ve just received an e-mail from Rice in Texas saying that they’ll waive my application fee so I guess I’ll apply there too. Can anyone please chance me for the above 4 schools though? And more recommendations please! I need to make one final list =)
