Need reach/target schools

Hi everyone! I just took a trip to the east coast and looked at most of the ivys and some other, smaller liberal arts colleges there. I liked most of what I saw, absolute favourites were Amherst, Princeton and Wellesley, but now looking at my list, it is way too top heavy, with lots of reach schools and not enough targets. Please could you suggest some target schools and comment on my chances of getting into an Ivy.

Im a senior at a public high school in california
SAT superscore: 2210 (Reading 750, Math 740, Writing 720)
ACT: 34
AP Euro, AP US, AP Physics: All 5's
Unweighted GPA 4.0, Weighted 4.6
IB full diploma candidate
Extracurriculars: started a community service club, Secretary General of my school's MUN program, probably president of Academic Decathlon team, and I lived in South Africa for 3 years (grade 7 to 10)

So again, target schools please, and chance at Ivies.

You have a chance at Ivies but admission into them is a crapshoot. I hope you’re looking at the UCs as well. What can your family afford?

Oh and I forgot: Subject tests- Math 2: 760, US History 790, Physics 780
Erin’s Dad. Thanks, yeah Im going to apply to most of the UCs as well, We’re middle class, so could afford a UC or a private with good financial aid.

Are you interested in mid-west LACs? The merit aid might be better and you might find something a little easier than Amherst to get into----Carlton (only slightly easier), Grinnell, Kenyon. What about Johns Hopkins or Northwestern? Again, very tough to get into but slightly easier than Amherst and Princeton. Trinity would be more of a safety. Pennsylvania LACs? Bucknell, for example.

What major(s) are you most interested in?

You say “middle class, so could afford a UC or private with good financial aid”. Sit down with your family and some financial aid estimators such as the FAFSA estimator. You may get into Princeton, for example, then find that it will cost you $50K more than UCLA. Please take a look at schools that offer good merit aid. Your excellent stats will get you lots of $$ at some very good schools- just look at the Schools that offer excellent merit aid" thread.

Might look at Holy Cross and Bowdoin-both SAT optional LAC’s. Holy Cross(don’t have to be religious) has a very nice campus 1 hour from Boston and is strong in the science majors. HC is good with financial aid(need-blind like the Ivies). Bowdoin also has a very nice campus in a small town but is harder to gain admission to than Holy Cross.

*We’re middle class, so could afford a UC or a private with good financial aid. *

UC’s cost about $30k per year. Have your parents said that they will pay that much?

Would you qualify for aid at a private? Aid is based on income/assets. I know that in Calif, people call incomes with $125k+ “middle class” but that’s not what colleges consider to be “middle class.”

UCs don’t give aid to the middle class. UCs reserve their aid for the low income students.
