Need Reaches!

Hey there,

I have applied to my safety and match schools and I need a little help deciding good schools to apply to as "reach" possibilities.

My stats:
SAT: Superscore from most recent test: 1440/2070
- Math - 780
- CR - 660
- Writing - 630
(expecting around 2100-2150 from DEC SAT)

SAT II:
- Math II: 730
- bio: 670

EC:
A few basic clubs (math club, community service club, spanish club, nhs, snhs)
Health club: Goes to competitions etc. (1st place county, 3rd place state)
JROTC: Commander of varsity team
Georgia Boys state
Summer program (governor's)
Own 2 websites
Volunteering at hospital

Class rigor:
about 10 AP classes from Junior to Senior.

Class rank:
About 7%

GPA:
3.6UW 4.25W
Huge upward trend - B's Freshman, A's S/J/S

Other:
Ethnicity: White
First gen: Yes
very Low income
Teacher rec: Decent

Essays: Decent

My college interests: (undergrad)
1. Offers Biology major
2. Nothing too far away from the North East.
3. I would favor urban over rural (although my preference isn't enough to persuade me away from a school)
4. Offers good FinAid to students of low income

As a reach, I mean any school that has the admissions rigor above BC.
Please give me YOUR advice!

I am looking to apply to a few schools as reaches, how many (a healthy number of reaches to apply to) and which ones do YOU think I should apply to?

How many:

Colleges the beautiful Rick should apply to:

(Optional) Why:

So far I was thinking: (maybe)
- Cornell University
- Georgetown University

I appreciate your advice, THANKS!

Furman, Emory.

Ooh, haven’t looked into those! Thanks!

Rice, UPenn (large reach), Cornell, Northwestern, Tufts

Comparing the time it takes to apply to UPenn and my chance of getting in, is it worth attempting?

Furman was mentioned, but that school does not have “admissions rigor above BC”. Hopefully you applied to BC (high match, imo)… great school! You may also want to look at Duke, WashUStL, and Johns Hopkins for good reach schools.

Well, It’s U Penn so admission for anyone is unpredictable. However, you SAT score is above bottom 25% and your grades show improvement from freshmen year. If you someone incorporate that improvement into an essay, you have a shot - albeit not very high, but no one’s chance of admission to any ivy is “high.” It’s completely up to whether or not you want to apply.

As for the suggestion of Hopkins - it doesn’t meet full need, whereas Emory, Cornell, WUST, Duke, Rice, Northwestern, Tufts all do.

On a side note, you’re about as likely to get into Duke as your are to Penn.

Definitely, I applied to BC REA. Probably my top choice of the schools I’ve applied to already.
I was unsure of JHU, how is their location and class body? For some reason, I always imagine a strictly medical class body. How are their academics from a liberal-arts perspective?

Thanks NYU2013, I’ll definitely add it to my consideration!

JHU is in a pretty busy part of Baltimore. It has a large focus on science/medicine (It’s spends more money on research than any other university), that being said it’s liberal arts education is not too bad. The term “political science” was actually coined there.

You have opened my eyes again, NYU2013.

What are my chances for JHU compared to UPenn?

Just trying to get a feel.

Your chances at JHU are much better than at Penn. Penn is extremely selective, whereas JHU is a bit less so. Your SAT score is well within the middle 50% range, 30% of current students there were admitted with a GPA in your range, and being in the top 7% is a huge bonus, as only 80% of current students were in the top 10% of their class. Overall, you stand a very good chance of being accepted - JHU is need blind, but does not meet full need.

As long as the school is possible through loans, federal grants, etc…
If JHU left a gap that must be paid out of pocket greater than $5,000 (a year), I don’t think I would be able to attend.

“Does not meet full need”-- Do you think the unmet need is possible to cover (In my situation)?

If you are low income, you’d be best off focusing on schools that meet need. Your CR score will make ivies tough, I’d look at some of the LACs on the list like Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Carleton.

Will take note, LACs.

Do these schools offer strong biology majors as well as research opportunities? (in general)

Bumpity bump!

I need a broader range of input!

My help suddenly died…

Aww, come on!
