My daughter a junior going to senior failed pre-calculus junior year both semesters and is retaking in summer right now she failed and got a D first semester in the summer. Is it better to make her drop the class and make it look bad on college app or make her continue first semester and try to finish with a B so it averages to a C? I don’t know which one would be better because she failed last year and supposively second semester is harder? Please help me out she took geometry freshman year, alg2 sophomore and failed pre calc both semester junior year… btw each semester is 400 dollars for summer so I don’t know know and I am freaking out because I have to make a decision by today thank you
Why is she failing? Have you talked to the teacher?
It might be unrealistic to expect the second semester grade to come up to a B in then circumstances you describe.
She just doesn’t understand pre calculus and she studies really hard and I take away all her electronic devices too imnnot sure should I talk to her teacher?
I would have her drop it and retake it in high school with tutoring. She’s obviously having a problem and ‘more of the same’ isn’t going to help. She’s not going to pass second semester if she doesn’t have the base concepts (first semester).
Don’t worry about college apps right now. She’s got to get out of high school.
Sorry, that is stressful and I am asking some questions to understand the situation. If she drops the summer class will it even show up on a college app? Can she realistically get a B this summer? It would certainly be better to get it overwith - can you get tutoring at this point? My concern is senior year has a lot of distractions and although the pace is faster in the summer, this is all she has to focus on I would think…
But if she is going to fail it again this summer, it may be better to cut your losses. It is hard to know if she is really trying and putting in the time, or if it is just really difficult for her from this side of the screen…
But the thing is all the tutors where I am charge soooo much and do you mean take it through out school year again? With the tutor? Thanks for replies
It’s it’s difficult for her
At the same time we’re on a budget and if I make her retake it what if she fails again that would be a waste of my money
Yes, sign up for Precalculus all year next year. Summer classes move really fast and she’s already behind. Many teachers offer help after school if you cannot afford a private tutor. Or your school’s National Honor Society may offer student-to-student tutoring for fre,
My goal would be for my kid to learn math. If she feels like she’s not ready for this course and/or that it’s going too fast, maybe step back and spend the rest of the summer building her math skills. Try Khan Academy online or search for free math help sites. What was the last math class that she passed?
If your daughter truly can finish the class with a B in the following semester to average out the overall grade into a C, then maybe it will be a good choice. However, my question is whether she can truly handle it. You might want to hear your daughter’s opinion about this first: Whether she has been putting full efforts into this to get the best grade all along.
If her response was yes to that question and if she is not confident that she can pull a B or so, then I would strongly recommend against taking it in the following semester as receiving the same poor grade continuously will only lower the quality of your daughter’s transcript. In addition, your daughter’s grades in senior year will matter the most if the school she is most willing to go to doesn’t accept early decision or early action (ED and EA take grades up to the end of 11th grade; RD takes grades up to the first semester of 12th grade). You might not want her to spend too much time on that class instead of evenly distributing her time of studies into all the classes she is taking, only to worsen the situation.
She passed algebra 2 sophomore year
On on top of that she takes SAT classes right after a 5 hour summer school class so should it best to drop it? Because when talking to her she was crying about it and very upset
So senior year you’re telling me for her to just forget pre-calc and just do stats or something?
What does she want to do? If she was my kid, I’d let her drop it. How did she do in Algebra 2?
She had a B and an A
I would talk to the math department at your high school to find the right math class.
When you say she “passed” Algebra 2 do you mean barely passed or with a good grade?
She should have learned basic statistics in Algebra 2, so I would ask her how she did in that section before considering taking statistics as a class. It also might be better to take a difficult math class during the school year rather than the summer. Summer classes often speed up the pace, and if your daughter is already struggling with the course, that would only make it worse.
My kids HS had the kids on the math team (not just good in math- the kids who LOVED math and breathed math) tutor kids who were struggling after school. It was free and supervised by one of the math teachers.
Your D has likely missed a concept or two along the way, so piling on more of the math that she isn’t understanding doesn’t help her fundamental issue. I think she’d be better served with some basic math review in the weeks remaining of the summer- core skills like manipulating fractions and percentages and basic geometry-- where she can review until she knows the material stone cold. Then- agree with AroundHere- you need to get the math department at your HS involved to find her the right math class for the Fall. What did her math teacher propose besides summer school- is there an area that’s weak or that she’s clueless on? Start there.
Just so you know, @helpmeeeeeeeee, you don’t have to actually be a parent to post in the Parents Forum.
