Need Safeties

Hi..

I am looking for a list of safety colleges with need based/merit aid

Stats :

SAT: 2030 (630CR , 670W, 730M)
SAT 2 : Chem - 760 , Math 2 - 720

High school Transcripts : All A's , except 2 B's . School doesnt have GPA system. Rank top 5%
Rank 10/413

Decent EC's ...etc (wont bore you with them)

need almost full aid.

College should have econ and preferably engineering.

We need more details. Are you a senior? What state are you in? What area of the country do you want to be in? Are you financial aid eligible?

Yes, I am a senior… will be applying now…

I am a US citizen… but not a resident of any state since I have lived abroad almost all my life. I will be applying from a high school abroad.

I am of asian origin ( know it will make it more competitive)

Yes, I am financial aid eligible.

thanks!

[Alfred University : Academics : Degrees/Majors](http://alfred.edu/academics/degrees_majors.cfm)

Take a look at Alfred University (NY) with School of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts, School of Business, School of Art & Design.

2200 undergrads, need-based aid, merit aid, Division III Athletics, No Greek Life, small classes, know your professors. 50% Male, 50% Female, Honors Program, Co-op Program in Engineering. Not a 50k-plus school! Located in charming village of Alfred, NY.

Rollling admissions. At peak vacation times, shuttles go to Buffalo & Rochester airports.

Best of luck to you!

thanks… any others?

Being Asian won’t matter at safety schools…they pretty much admit by stats…not by race or by ECs.

Can you family contribute anything to your education?

If not, then there probably aren’t any/many safeties that will be affordable since you will require international travel.

You have a 1360 M+CR …that is what many schools use to determine merit. To get full tuition scholarships from mid-tier schools, you generally need a 1400+. Of course, that doesn’t count room, board, books, travel, etc.

Safety schools do not typically meet high need. However, some do give big merit for high stats. Your stats, while good, are not high enough for “full rides” to top or mid tier schools.

Merit scholarships do not cover all costs… They tend to cover partial tuition or full tuition, but not usually room, board, & books, and I don’t think ANY cover travel, and personal expenses.

I don’t think your stats are high enough for big merit from most/any top 100 schools at this time that include engineering. If you had applied before Dec 1st, you would have had some opportunities for free tuition at some schools.

There are some 3rd/4th tier schools with engineering that might give you some merit. You might try Miss St or LSU, but again, you won’t get a “free ride.” you may get tuition (maybe), and if your income is low enough, you might get a small amount of federal aid, but you will still likely need to contribute some money from your family.

When you say that you qualify for aid, what do you mean? Are you saying that your family is very low income and you would qualify for Pell grants? If so, at most, that is only $5550 at most. If your family is “average income”, then you may not qualify for any aid except small loans (not enough to pay for school).

Are your parents US citizens as well? Either way, they will have to file a FAFSA to see if you qualify for a small grant and a small federal loan. I don’t know how the FAFSA process handles income/assets from another country. I’m guessing that you convert to US dollars and put in the numbers.

Thanks a lot for that post - momtocollegekids…

well… by saying that i qualify for aid i meant low income…

However, where would colleges like Bentley etc come?

… And, to determine a safety, what criteria do u use… I see whether I’m above the 75th percentile of their SAT scores…

A safety is…

A true safety is school where you’re assured to get in and ALL costs are covered. Just looking at top 25% is not going to tell you if a school is a true safety. many kids have top stats, but get rejected at schools with low acceptance rates.

Schools that give the best aid also have lowish acceptance rates. That’s why it’s hard to find an affordable true safety for someone who isn’t a resident for any state.

So…if you find a school where your stats are high and the school has a high acceptance rate, then that is an admissions safety. however, if the school doesn’t have much aid to give, then it won’t be a true safety because you won’t be able to afford to go there.

I don’t know if Bentley has engineering…

Financial Aid Statistics
Full-time freshman enrollment: 1,012
Number who applied for need-based aid: 752
Number who were judged to have need: 479
Number who were offered aid: 477
Number who had full need met: 205

Average percent of need met: 94%
Average financial aid package: $29,106
Average need-based loan: $4,498
Average need-based scholarship or grant award: $20,801
Average non-need based aid: $17,052
Average indebtedness at graduation: $33,073

Bentley might work out, but it doesn’t meet need and it’s COA isn’t going to include international travel costs.

their stats are odd. Only about half that asked for aid were judged to have need. Then, only about half of those students had their needs met (so does that mean that they didn’t have high need?). They claim that

Out-of-state tuition and fees: $37,058
Room and board: $12,180
Books and supplies: $1,100
Estimated personal expenses: $1,135
Transportation expense: doesn’t give any for those who live on campus

COA without int’l travel costs…about $52k per year.

If your family can’t contribute ANYTHING, then Bentley may or may not work out. You’ll have to wait and see, but since it’s unknown now, it can’t be a safety…it’s more like a “financial reach.”

Are your parents US citizens?

Manhattan College is good with aid and also is very strong in engineering. They also have business/economic programs.

… thanks mom2collegekids and poi…

mom2collegekids … can i PM you?

bumpppppp…

Tulane University is known to be very generous with merit aid and they have an engineering school.
