s/he could get in trouble when the professor finds those two papers very similar. cheating=bad. especially on a final. and im not going to let someone use me to get better grades, plus my classes are scaled or curved so i want everyone to do worse than me

my favorite quotes of this thread :)

Don't be a loser, who cares if they cheated. It's not like you are getting in trouble so why gives a crap? Jeeze. You honestly wouldn't have a problem messing up someone's entire academic career?

wow..... so tattle tails do exist still. Huh. Well whenever i see someone cheating off me i encourage it. If someone else can benefit off of my hard work too, that makes it even more worthwhile.

I think cheating is perfectly OK.

If you get caught, just say you misinterpreted the rules

It's called the White People Method, works every time. The patriots did it and got away with it, why can't academics?

Seems like a couple people are confused here. Turning in a cheater will NOT get you in trouble with your school. On the other hand, if you don't turn him in and the professor thinks one of you(or both) cheated, you can both get in trouble(especially if you actively allowed him to cheat; that's considered cheating). And the punishment for cheating usually is (minimum case)failure of that test, if not the course, for that person, perhaps with a semester or two of suspension, if not dismissal from the school(extreme case). This is coming from my school at least, where I was a member of the hearing board(I judged and juried a couple cases). You feel bad for this person you don't know, but they did it, they knew the potential consequences of cheating.

Its russian roulette with a giant chamber. You might survive all your life pulling the cheating trigger and getting the blank but then again there is a chance that you might get the bullet.

My personal opinion is to turn that person in if its a big class and you don't know the guy(f*$% him) but if its a small class and a person you know, approach him. And you should cover up your test or go talk to the professor immediately if you feel like it(ask him to seat you somewhere else because you feel like the seating arrangement might allow someone to cheat, it'll make sure you won't get in trouble since the prof will remember that you mentioned something and it'll make the cheater sweat balls now that you're sitting somewhere else, you talked to the professor, and he can't cheat off of you).

I'm surprised that it took someone so long to post the South Park joke, its a recent episode.

I wouldnt just assume that the person that cheated off you was out getting drunk the night before, while you were studying. Im sure that most people here, myself included, have studied hours upon hours for a test, and then when they take the test, they dont seem to know anything. Dont judge a book by its cover

Wow, this topic is still on? I've been enjoying myself for the past week trying to forget about school in general. Kinda forgot it existed...

Anyways, I am astounded at how low some people on here can be. Seriously, you guys have just degraded my opinion of the human race even further. I've only seen about 10 rational posts on here. Amazing how many scumbags are on here for a supposed intellectual forum.

Amidst the number of crappy responses on here, I'm glad to see there are people like Georgeanne, 252525, bja1288, dmission, BP-TheGuy88, ivanadoeslimbo, FemmeFatale, and mcim.

To answer your questions:
It's a final. 30% of our grade. That's kinda high stakes don't you think?

The guy left early. I think he knew I knew he was cheating so he just gave up trying to leech off me and didn't answer the last question so he will probably get <=80%

The person is an adult already. He should know the consequences of his actions. If he wants to cheat he should know the risk that comes with it. Whoever says don't turn him in because it will get him kicked out don't know what they're talking about.

And I have morals, unlike most of you, which is why I was even asking this to begin with.

CAKI: I don't need to hear from people like you. Get a life.

cbulla21: You would be catching occasional glances at his test too if you were sitting RIGHT NEXT TO HIM.

ivanadoeslimbo: The professor doesn't even know our names. Why would he have a seating chart?

AULostChick: It's a statistics with calculus class, with mostly engineers, math majors, and all that. I don't think an English major would be taking a statistics with calculus class unless they have another major that requires it, or may need it later.

OKGirl: Yes, I did cover my test. However, it doesn't help when you're sitting at the back and the cheater is sitting RIGHT NEXT TO YOU. I honestly didn't know he was cheating off me until the test was almost over. As soon as I realized it I tried covering everything I wrote. However, covering all my previous answers only slows me down, as some questions used the answers from previous questions, which is why I didn't do it before, if anybody was wondering. I think it might've worked, as he left early.

252525: I definitely agree with the moral downslide. Just look at the responses!

As you can probably tell, I kinda forgot about this whole ordeal, since school has been rather stressful this past semester, so I guess you people can infer what action I took.

I don't feel good about it, knowing he got away with it, but I'm satisfied knowing he won't be getting an A.

I however, believe that this fool will get what's coming to him later, since he had to stoop low enough to be cheating off a freshman.

And the final grades came in. I got a 92 and an A in the class. Nothing to worry about. I'm pretty sure the guy won't get that grade, for the reasons stated above.

itsgr82bagator, congratulations on your A and your words of wisdom. I too as ASTOUNDED at the attitude of those who write on this subject. Recognize that these people (the cheaters) grow up to be husbands and wives (who may cheat on you), employees (who may cheat and steal from your business), and neighbors and friends (who steal your grass clippers when you are not looking, LOL), and YOU could be the one who gets hurt, and deeply, by people with this flagrant attitude!

its probably because they themselves cheat.

If you have to cheat, you probably shouldn't be there in the first place- goes for college, sports, life.

^ Love your screen name :D

Thanks. My dad got kicked off of here, so I was toying around with that, or "Free Opie". Turns out that you can't disagree with a moderator.

This is brilliance.

Seriously dude. If this guy cheats off your test, he's going to get a better job than you, and a hotter wife than you, and he'll live forever in a hot tub with champaign and everyone will respect him for his "fierce intellect". You'll get pushed out of the job market, your telemarketing position will get outsourced, and you'll fight with the hobos in the subway system over busking privileges.

So I took my last final the other day, and the room wasn't big enough to let people sit one seat apart, so there were some people sitting right next to each other. It so happens that I was between two people. Sometime during the test I noticed one of the guys sitting beside me was glancing in my direction often. Not unusual I suppose, but then it soon became clear that he was trying to cheat off me, because he was writing only when I was. I stopped for a good 5-10 minutes thinking about a question and I noticed he wasn't writing anything. I also happened to glance at his paper once, and he had almost the exact things I wrote, confirming my suspicion.
Now it makes me mad that someone would use me like that. Question is, should I tell the professor about this?
[/quote]

Yes! Tell! Because I'm sure the teacher would notice two people had the same answers and if you get it cleared soon, then you won't be the one that gets in trouble. It'd be easy for the other person to say, "You know I think I saw him looking at my paper..."

how many of you guys in here would let your BEST friend cheat off you (and he/she really needed it or else he/she would fail the class and be very miserable)?

-be honest!

If it was my best friend I might let them copy my homework as long as they didn't write exact answers. However, tests, never. I'd let them fail for sure. And if they tried to cheat off me anyway, I'd tell someone. There's no way I'm going to risk getting kicked out of school for someone that can't study on their own.

If it was my best friend, they would have let me know that they were having problems with the material and I would have offered to help them BEFORE the test. Prevention being the best medicine and all that ;)

^ lol, you don't have to do the "reason" part but w/e :)

n i thnk ppl wo typ lke dis pss me of >:[

I wouldn't let my best friend cheat off of me. A degree is supposed to say something about your competency in a subject, and if you can't pass it on your own steam then you haven't demonstrated competence.

I would absolutely help my best friend study, explain the material as best I could, so that he or she could understand it, but I wouldn't let him or her cheat.

Yeah, I'm even iffy about sharing homework. It'd have to be multiple choice or maaaaybe fill in the blank. When it becomes short answers or papers, then it's a flat out no. A test is a double no. A real friend doesn't put their friend in that kind of situation.
