Need Some Advice on Choosing a Master's for Grad School and Timeline

I am interested in getting my masters in communications.

NOT JOURNALISM. I mean communications (e.g organizational communications, intercultural communications, interpersonal communications)

I will be graduating with a 3.75 and three internships in marketing/communications.

I plan to do research this semester to get a thesis of sorts.

I think I can do pretty well at the GREs and get decent letters of recommendations.

My questions are:

Will I get into top colleges? I mean top 15-20

Is getting a masters in communications a terrible idea?

Top colleges are very selective and are never a sure thing. No one can really give you a gauge on your chances. Instead of communications, have you considered a Masters in Design. A lot of what is done in design nowadays is communications.

With your GPA and three internships, plus a thesis, I’d say you’d be pretty competitive for top 20 programs (although of course we can’t say whether or not you’ll get in).

Whether or not getting a master’s in communications is a good idea depends on what you intend to do with it. When choosing schools, be sure to take a look at their career services website and try to figure out what alumni do after graduating. Generally speaking, a master’s degree is a means to an end; you get one because you need it for further study in a particular area, not just to get it in general. So what it is you want to do?

I just love Communications. I don’t know exactly how I want to apply it, but I want to specialize in interpersonal/organizational comm and perhaps work on the client side at ad agencies. Basically the person who communicates the clients ideas to his team. And then helps present the pitch.)

Duvy1234, I think you should get some real work experience first before going straight for a graduate degree, especially in communications. Communications is so broad. I graduated from college and got a job in advertising at a top agency with no grad school experience. Only now am I applying as a mid-career student to get me access into another career!

Hey Cspains, yes I intend to work for two years before doing this.

Can you give me any advice of advertising?
