I'm currently a high school junior in a very competitive class and I'm not sure whether or not I should retake one of my SAT II's.

Chemistry: 800
Math IIC: 800
US History: 750 <----This one

The problem is that this score isn't so much lower than my other two that I would automatically retake it, and its not high enough for me to automatically keep it. If my 3 scores were 780, 780, and 790, which adds up to the same sum as my above 3 scores, I wouldn't have a problem since the scores are all comparable but in this case, 50 points seems like a large difference and perhaps it suggests a weakness in humanities.

My other test scores are all good:
SAT
CR: 770 Math: 790 Writing: 800

AP
Euro: 5
Stat: 5
(Waiting on 5 more this year)

So basically, the bottom line is, is my US score a conspicuous flaw in my academic profile and would it be a reason for a top college to reject me (Ignoring EC's for now)? Keep in mind that there are various other students in my class with similar or better scores. Thanks.

I apologize if this thread comes across as arrogant or condescending since 750 is still a very good score compared to the national average, but just try to understand that I will be applying to highly selective colleges.

a 750 for US history is fine…
I don’t think you need to retake that one.
Some unis/ colleges might actually dislike it when you focus way too much on 30 or something points…
try to think of some other things that might look good on your application. I think you got the decent scores you need just work on ur application…

I think you’re fine, especially with your other scores. I’m sure you have a good GPA to back it up and some ec’s so you seem to be in a good boat. Good luck mate.

I don’t want to be snarky, because I think you are seriously asking this question, but no, you definitely DON’T need to retake that test. Your score is very good, and in conjunction with your other scores, shows that you have a good handle on this and other subjects.

I inderstand the stress of college applications and the high level of competition, but do you really think an adcom is going to pick one candidate over another with otherwise identical scores because they answered three or four more questions correctly on one US History test? Really? Test scores are but one of the factors they assess, and yours are in the topmost category along with the guy who got 800 on his USH test. No difference whatsoever.

It’s the whole package they’ll look at - scores, grades, rigor of classes, essays, interviews, recommendations, extracurriculars, etc., etc., and obsessing about a “perfect” score would be just silly. In time, you’ll get some perspective about the whole process, but for now, I’d keep in mind that you’ll do just fine at whatever college you go to. Admissions to the most selective schools is, when you get down to the final candidates, very much a crapshoot. Find a range of schools you’d be happy to attend, and make the most of wherever you eventually go, no matter the name on the diploma. YOU will determine your ultimate success, not where you go to school. Good luck!

Alright, sounds good. Thanks for all the input guys. :)
