Need some college advice with scholarships/getting into Georgia Tech/UF, etc.

Hey guys so right now I'm a sophomore in high school taking really advanced classes. I'll be graduating having taken AP Calc I/II, Differential Equations, and Matrix Theory along with AP Physics I/II. I'll also be taking 5 APs this year (10th grade) and 7 APs in both 11th and 12th grade (thats including the ones I stated above). Also the school I go to makes us do two 2-week courses at a nearby college (FAU) on mechical, chemical, and electrical engineering. I'm thinking I'll be having a 3.3-3.5 GPA (unweighted) and whatever that is weighted (I think 4.4-4.7). Will UF and Georgia Tech consider the fact that my GPA is lower but I've taken classes very few kids do in high school? I'm expecting my SATs to be around 2000-2100. Also, will scholarships that I apply for look at the fact that my GPA is low but my classes are advanced? One last thing I wanted to know about (which I don't expect answers for but hey you never know) is how scholarships (specifically public ones) work for non-citizens. I have a Tax-ID but not a Social Security number because the US government is stupid like that. Will that decrease the amount of scholarships I can apply for?

EDIT: Also I wanted to ask how many and what kind of ECs I should be having! All I got so far is 170 hours as a Medical Media Lab Technician at a local VA hospital :/

First, take a look at the Freshman Profiles at both Schools.

GT Middle 50%
GPA: 3.77-4.08 SAT: 1960-2160 ACT: 28-32
UF Middle 50%
GPA: 4.1-4.5 SAT: 1840-2100 ACT: 28-32

If you want to earn a rare merit scholarship from either of these two schools, you will need to do better than the middle 50%.

You need to recalculate your GPA. GT only gives 0.5 points for AP/DE/IB courses (not sure if they recognize AICE). They give nothing for honor course. If your GPA is 3.3, the best it can be with GT is 3.8, and that’s only if every class you’ve taken since 9th grade is AP/DE/IB.

For UF, it’s 0.5 point for honor and 1.0 points for AP/DE/IB/AICE. So if your GPA is 3.3, the best it could be with UF is 4.3 (not likely since you would have had to take ALL AP/DE/IB/AICE courses since the 9th grade).

Both schools take into account the rigor of your classes.

Your citizenship may impact which scholarships are available. You should look at each schools website for details on the available scholarships.

If you’re in-state for UF, then you have a good chance of being admitted, if your stats match the middle 50%.

GT accepts a significant amount of OOS (28%) and international (8%) students, so your chances are good if you meet the middle 50% stats.

Good Luck!

Yes, Georgia Tech will consider the fact that you’re advanced in math classes. However, note that Tech tends to attract kids who are advanced in math, so you may be competing with other math geniuses/advanced math students with higher GPAs than yours. (I do think they consider weighted GPAs, though.) Also, if you’re not a GA resident, you should know that Georgia Tech doesn’t give the best financial aid and their merit scholarships are notoriously competitive.

It sounds like you aren’t a citizen and don’t have a green card. IF so, then no aid may be available to you.

I don’t think GT has any aid for int’ls. Don’t know about UF. Both schools expect really high stats for merit. A 2000-2100 SAT isn’t high for those schools.

The State of Florida has a “Latin American-Caribbean (LAC) Scholarship” (Florida statute 1009.21).

[UFIC - International Student Services](<a href=“University of Florida International Center”>University of Florida International Center)

To qualify, UF students must be awarded a non-duty scholarship of a minimum of $500 per semester paid from either state or federal funds. If you qualify, you pay in-state tuition. Many of Florida’s Universities also offer small LAC scholarships($250-$500 a semester), that allow you to meet the requirements for the LAC Scholarship/in-state tuition.

UF is still very competitive, but the other state schools are less so (such as UCF, USF, FAU and FIU).

EDIT: UF in-state Tuition is $6,100, while OOS Tuition is $28,400; at FAU, in-state is $4,800, while OOS is $17,200.

Thanks man! Honestly probably the most helpful advice I’ve ever gotten on college in my life! Had no idea UF and GT recalculate GPA!
