Hey everyone, need some advice on choosing the right college for me. I have sent in a deposit to Smith College but I'm having second thoughts. I'm an international student here and I've lived in a country which is summer all year around, so I know the weather is going to be super harsh if I go to Smith. Also, Smith is an all women's college, super pro-feminist and I am no feminist. Like, at all. I have studied in a co-ed environment my entire life so I know studying in a small, women's college will be super different. I'll either super like it or super hate it. And I'm not sure if I'm willing to take the risk.
The other college I'm considering is UC Davis. I feel maybe it is more reputable, more global recognition but everyone I have talked to says that academically, Davis is really bad. But I really would love to study in California and the weather would not be such a problem. Only thing about Davis is the bad academic environment everyone is warning me about.

So any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated! Thanks guys.

You are going off a lot of half cocked ideas.

Feminism is about getting paid the same as a man for the same job. Breaking misperceptions that you are bad at math because you are a female etc. Not being chased around a desk at work because no one takes it seriously. Not getting promoted because you aren’t in the boy’s club. Supporting other women in their social struggles. I’m sorry to hear you aren’t onboard with that. I don’t have any patience for such people, sorry.

Have you posted in the Smith forum to ask how the social life is with the other colleges in the consortium? I do know a guy who took a couple of classes at Smith. Smith is an excellent school where you will get a first class education. There is nothing ‘not reputable’ about it. My California daughter went to the East coast for college and adapted just fine, you just get the right clothes. I imagine it would be hard myself, but now she went to grad school in the Midwest where it is much colder and no complaints over the years.

UC Davis is an excellent college. But like almost all public colleges, it is large, classes can be very large especially in the lower division classes. It won’t have the flexibility of Smith to move around majors. Some classes may be full and you can’t get in it. But the weather will be much better yes. It is not ‘really bad’ or even ‘bad’. The only people who would say that are shallow people. It is a nationally ranked research university. Sure Berkeley is better for prestige but you don’t have that option. Don’t worry, people grow out of high school opinions and become wiser and not judge people on their college rankings. At least in this country. Hopefully yours too. Good luck with your choice. I personally would pick Smith, but either is good but different.
