Need some help eliminating NYC colleges from my list.

Living in the NYC metro area is going to cost a good deal more than $1500 for a one bedroom apartment. If she is attending grad school she will have a stipend however it may not cover all her expenses in a high cost area. I realize CA is high cost living area also. I know that several years ago my d was accepted at University of Washington for grade school and although she chose another school and another program for other reasons, the funding she received for University of Washington and the cost of attending/living in Seattle made it not the best option for her.

She’s around 7 or 8 months older. I graduated high school in 2011 same as her, but it took me a few years to realize working entry-level jobs for low wages wasn’t for me. Her grad school is almost entirely covered by her scholarship don’t worry about her. San Francisco area is considered just as high cost as NYC if not more if you’re looking at actual SF downtown.

Some of the CUNY’s have dorms. You might want to look into that. Rents in NYC are crazy. It may be hard to get a 1 Br for that amount, but you would have to research that and be open to living in outer boros.

I’m going to be living with my girlfriend so hard pass on dorms. I found some pretty nice looking places under 1500 in west new york, hoboken, and jersey city

I’ve been thinking about what various people said regarding why am I going to NYC if it’s not my favorite place. I think that besides Fordham, Rutgers, and maybe 1 more. I’m going to use other areas as backup schools. I’d probably rather be at Temple, or Roger Williams, or Umass Dartmouth, or PhilaU. Simply because I like Providence & Philly more than NYC

UMass Dartmouth and Phila U are very academically weak & unheard of. Neither of those schools are worth it just to get experience in the city. Is Dartmouth even near Boston?

Would you consider anywhere in the Southeast at all?

nyu undergrad business is simply not worth the cost. It is however, a great graduate business school and I know from personal experience but no way is an undergrad degree worth what they are asking for tuition these days. Hofstra is every bit as far away as TCNJ . BTW TCNJ is just 10 minutes from Princeton and 45 minutes to downtown NYC via train or car. I agree , Brooklyn College not worth it either as admission rate aside if youre looking for a business program its not really highly rated.

Temple’s a decent school.

@stones3 how exciting is Princeton? Is it fairly lively, or just another sleepy NJ suburb?

I’m looking at google maps right now and it says between Parsons (where my girlfriend would go in NYC) and TCNJ it’s 1.5 hours by car or 2.5 hours by public transit? Whereas Hofstra is a little over an hour away from parsons by car, and around an hour 45 min by transit. That being said, it’s still pretty far and I might skip having it on my list.

UMass Dartmouth is near Providence, and no I would not consider anywhere besides these areas (ranked by desire to be there)
Providence
Philadelphia
Seattle
Boston
NYC

My full list as of now is
Rutgers
Drexel
University of washington
Seattle university
U of rhode island
U of delaware
Fordham
Boston U (reach)
Bentley U (reach)
Northeastern U (reach)
Bryant University
Clark University

I want to add 1 or 2 more universities but I can’t decide what admission difficulty of school I should be adding.
Other colleges that were at some point on my list:
Rider
Roger Williams University
Pace
Suffolk
Hofstra
NYIT
NYU
Temple
Villanova (still might add but undecided)
UMass Dartmouth
PhilaU
Babson College

You already have several schools. Add Roger Williams and delete Clark (which isn’t that close to Boston and is in a worse area than most other schools on your list). I would maybe look into adding Villanova as a low reach

Oh and I couldn’t edit it again - but I was reading about a school called Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken where the graduates seem to make ALOT of money, and they have a Finance degree.

I’m keeping clark. They have an accelerated masters in finance program where you graduate in 5 years with a ba in economics and a master’s in finance

Stevens PG salaries are inflated because it’s a decent STEM-focused school in the Northeast. It’s a fine school but those stats are inflated. Its grad rates are about average (four-year is poor - 38%).

Clark is a decent school, sure. But are you sure it isn’t too small for you?

It’s a little on the small side, but I would only go if I had a solid shot at the accelerated MSF. That’s literally the only reason I’m applying there, and it’s close enough to either boston or providence that we could split the commute

I’d drop Drexel in the Philly area and maybe look at West Chester. If you have unlimited finances then Drexel is ok to keep. Add Temple.

I already have cheap ish schools like UD, UW, URI, a couple others on my list. West chester isn’t particularly known either and it’s an hour away from philly. I’m looking for some name recognition at least. It’s not like drexel is #1 on my list anyways. I’m probably going to add temple, and maybe villanova

Why don’t you add Providence College? It’s, you know, right in Providence. :stuck_out_tongue:

Have a look at Seattle Pacific as well.

SPU seems too religious for me. I’ll look into providence college again though.
I’m trying to only add Christian schools that are really strong academically.
For example Fordham and villanova

Drop Pace
Drop NYIT
If you’re going for a STEM related field & want something close to NYC, NJIT would be a much better safety than Hofstra,Pace, & NYIT. Rutgers Newark is also a decent if you’re doing business, health, or law. SUNY Albany is also good, but far from NYC. These will still be around $40K for OOS. Honestly you should just stick to a Cal State for safeties($30K & less)

Why don’t you choose CSU Long Beach? That’s probably you’re best safety as it’ll be cheaper since your in-state. I don’t think it’s too far from LA. It’s just as good as those other safeties on your list. UC Riverside is also better & you’ll probably pay the same as OOS, it not a bit less.

As for matches/low reaches Rutgers New Brunswick,UC Santa Cruz, Drexel, & CP Pomona are all good.

As for reaches UPitt, Northeastern, Fordham, NYU, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, CP SLO, Stevens are all good reaches.

Cali has good schools & even the expensive UC’s will be the same price, if not cheaper than OOS equivalents in most states.

So to wrap up
Safeties- Other CSU’s, CSU Long Beach, UC Riverside
Matches- UC Santa Cruz, Rutgers NB, Drexel, CP Pomona, CP SLO
Reaches- NYU, Northeastern, Fordham, UPitt, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, Stevens
