Need some help regrouping. Where should I apply?

For a long time I've had a very strong interest in Washington and Lee. I interviewed there, visited, and made them my Early Decision. I was pretty sue I had a good chance with their relatively high Early Decision acceptance rate, but apparently I was wrong. I was rejected/referred today. I'm starting to think I was very overly optimistic about my stats.
If someone can look at these and tell me what schools should be my target etc. I would strongly appreciate it. (my current favorites are Davidson, Emory, Yale, Princeton (these two are probably veery far reaches), Duke, and as safety UGA

about me:
*homeschooled until halfway through high-school. I went to a co-op where I received a classical education that included a huge amount of literature. two years of latin, etc (history, grammar, rhetoric, logic). Meanwhile my father taught me math.

Starting Sophomore year I went to a small local private Christian school to get my science education. As a Sophomore I took Chemistry, then as a Junior I took AP Chem. Chem was and is one of my weakest subjects, and I scored a very disappointing 3 on the exam.

Sophomore: PSAT: 220 NMSF
ECs: intern for PoliSci professor at UGA. Worked as dishwasher for restaurant, teen volunteer for local hospital, mock trial team: witness

Junior: SAT (after a few tries) superscore: 2300 (math:750, CR: 760, Writing: 790), intern for professor at UGA, competitive mock trial team: co-attorney, two outstanding Georgia attorney awards, regional and district champions. pioneered International internship to work in hospital in Pretoria South Africa, partially overseen by local university. intern for a Georgia US congressman-elect. playing soccer on rec team.

Senior: in progress, head attorney on mock trial team, cumulative GPA ~3.89, playing soccer for school, and in process of applying for places.

Hit me with your best shot.

Also, if someone would critique my essay(s) I would love them forever.

Thanks for any help or advice you can offer!

A sophomore PSAT does not get you NMSF. The PSAT taken as a junior qualifies you. Try using the SuperMatch engine on the left of this page.

Hi, sorry, that was an error on my part. I took the psat as a junior. I’ve tried the super match etc. But I was really hoping for some more personal advice, as I don’t have the entirely typical high school experience.

This year I am taking ap calc bc, ap english,ap biology, and physics. I have a’s in all of them currently.

Hey! If you’re looking for something similar to Washington & Lee then you may want to look at either Amherst or Williams as they both share several characteristics in regards to academics and social scene. Also, you could never go wrong with Davidson so that’d be a great school to consider for early decision II. Also, if you’re from Georgia Emory should be a piece of cake looking at you stats and extracurriculars; just apply to oxford and you’re sure to get in. I can’t speak about any other school though.

If you were rejected from Washington and Lee in ED then I’d say that every school on your current list is a reach for RD. Yale and Princeton would be extreme reaches for you.

Your first priority is make sure that you have a safety that you know you will be admitted to and can afford. Does UGA (or some other state university like GCSU) fulfill both conditions?

what’s your gpa?

Were you deferred or outright rejected?

brownparent I was deferred.
slights32 gpa 3.89 UW, 4+ weighted
ucbalumnus yes! UGA and Presbyterian are my current ‘safety’ schools
cba I’m worried youre right. Do you think Emory and Davidson would be reaches for ed II or rd?

thanks for the advice

Just some ideas of schools that might be similar to W&L in some respects,
Sewanee, Rhodes, Centre. You would need to research to see if they interest you. What particular characteristics of W&L appeal to you? What are you potentially interested in studying?
Also, you may want to look at Hillsdale College in Michigan. It is a unique LAC, strong in the humanities with a center
located in D.C. geared toward constitutional studies. It is also friendly to homeschooled students.

I second Hillsdale and think with your early high school years you might be interested in St. John’s in Annapolis. Both schools are outside the box LACs and would be interesting options for safeties.

Thinking along the same lines as cellomom2, have you considered schools like Furman, Wake Forest or Elon?

If you love Washington & Lee, definitely look at Sewanee. I think Furman would also be a good choice.

I agree that given the deferral at Washington and Lee that Yale and Princeton should be viewed as high reaches and Duke a reach as well. I think there is too big of a gap between UGA and the other schools on your list. Unless you’d be perfectly happy going to UGA, I’d try to quickly try to seek out a couple of schools to fill that gap (ex. Tulane, Wake Forest, GW).

Hampden sydney?

Thanks for the responses!
I’m applying to Wake Forest right now, but it concerns me that they don’t ask for the sat as that’s one of my strong points. They’re also very expensive. I have a friend that’s going to Davidson and am becoming really interested in them. Do you think they would be a reach for me?

cellomom
mom24 I like Hillsdale as well, but my dad has some sort of bizarre hatred for the school.

First criterion is affordability. None of this advice you’ve received is going to help you if you don’t know what you can afford. Have you yet to run the net price calculators and have the talk with your parents about their contribution? Time is running out quickly.

I’m a current student and to be honest I’m shocked you didn’t get into W&L. If you are interested, make sure admissions knows. W&L loves demonstrated interest. If it doesn’t pan out for whatever reason, a ton of kids at W&L have siblings at Sewanee and/or Bucknell. A lot of kids who apply to W&L also apply to University of Richmond.

Good luck.

I have nothing to do with admissions but don’t count yourself out for RD.

@thecthaeh, I’m with @coppijr – surprised you weren’t admitted in W&L’s ED round and suggest you continue to show admissions the love in hopes of a RD acceptance.

Wake has a number of similarities to W&L, but Wake does not have the endowment to offer great financial aid packages. Davidson has generous FA; you’re right, it may be a reach, but you never know. (D was waitlisted at Davidson in a year when Davidson admitted a higher percentage of applicants than W&L, where she was admitted with a great scholarship. Go figure.)

If D hadn’t wound up at W&L, she would have gone to Sewanee. Gorgeous campus, strong academics, tight-knit alumni.
