I'm freaking out about this, and I know there's no reason to. I got my report card today, and mixed in with the A/A+ in honors and AP classes, I got a B- in gym. How? Don't ask. I'm not even sure. I got As the last 2 quarters. I'm going to talk to the teacher to see why tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'm unnecessarily freaking out. My school's GPA system is kinda bad too. 4.5 = A+ 4.17 = A 3.84 = A
I'm afraid that an the eventual A- average I'll have in gym will unnecessarily bring down my average, since it would be my lowest grade.

The UCs calculate the HS GPA themselves and don’t include PE courses in the calculation since it’s a non-academic course. I assume some other colleges do the same thing.

Trust me, do not worry about it…PE was my lowest grade–a B–through my 4 years of high school as well, and I was still accepted at 8 out of the 10 schools where I applied, including numerous highly selective (sub-25% accceptance rate) institutions. Somehow I do not think my 2 Ivy rejections were because of my B in PE class sophomore year either. The schools do not just plug your GPA into a machine that spits out acceptance/rejection/waitlist letters; they will look through your transcript and your grade in PE is not going to change anything as long as you achieved a passing grade and satisfied the graduation requirements of your school.

I know it seems like a big deal, and probably a bit embarrassing right now, but once you receive the many fabulous acceptances I am sure you will, you will laugh about this.

Stop the presses! Order sackcloth and ashes! Commence wailing!

And embrace the moment. There are kids (probably at your school) whose HIGHEST grade will be a B -.

Only here at CC is a B - a handwringing event. Do check it out. If you need to change something, do so.

And, if you ever get a free moment, read The Absolutely True Story of a part time Indian by Sherman Alexie. It’ll give you more perspective than a thousand posts here at CC.

In high schools with which I’m familiar PE is not part of the GPA calculation. Check to see if it is in your school. In any case, selective colleges focus on core courses – english, math, science, language, history. Your PE grades, unless they imply “failure” are really irrelevant from the perspective of your overall grades.

Yeaaaah. Pretty sure most schools would not give a damn about your PE grade.

Well, I found out that the B- was a mistake! Somehow, the gym teacher managed to give a bunch of people the wrong grade, and that I actually have an A. Hey, I think I have a higher GPA this year than last now.

Need some perspective? Ask next person you walk up to to slap you in the face as hard as they can.

One B- isn’t going to destroy your high school career.

Well, I found out that the B- was a mistake!

I was going to say that if you were not sure how you could have received a B- in gym, than there is a good chance that it might be a mistake. The same thing happened with D in Culinary. She freaked when she got a C but the teacher forgot to include her final assignment grade, which gave her an A.

You won’t even get into plumber school with a B- in PE, those guys have to be fit and coordinated. In other words, you are ruined.
