I'm already pretty much done applying to colleges, but I wanted to have at least one or two more safety schools. So, if anyone could suggest based on my stats that would be great!

ACT: 34
SAT: 2150 (680 CR, 720 M, 750 W)
GPA: 3.9 unweighted, 4.3 weighted
Top 2% of my class
Male Gymnast from small town in Idaho
Various state awards, and a national award
Various community service activities
Founder/President of Human Rights Club
Secretary/Treasurer of NHS

I've already applied to (as you can see, many of them are reach schools):
Yale
Harvard
Columbia
NYU
UC Berkeley
UC San Diego
UC Santa Cruz
U of Vermont

so, I need more safety schools, or at least even medium schools!
Thanks for the help :)

The UC application deadline is already over, and I already applied to three UC’s which I felt suite me best. So, I can’t change it now. Do you have any other suggestions besides the schools on my list that I have already applied to?

As long as your course load was rigorous, UVM and UCSC are safeties (particularly if UVM is rolling??). I’d advise more mid-range, depending on what you’re looking for in a college: WUSTL, Rice, other Ivies, Amherst, etc.

My course load has been the most rigorous offered at my school. And, I won’t be able to pay for the expense of the UCs if no financial aid or scholarships are given. However, I would rather build a list of more safe/middle schools first and then narrow it based on financial need. Any ideas for good mid-range schools? I am pretty sure UVM is a good safety. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be. But, I’d prefer one more. And, I am also applying to Brown and Stanford, so more reach schools unfortunately…

Unfortunately, this is not a good way to approach applying to colleges. Many who try this are stuck with their state school. I have no idea how much UVM will give you, but state colleges are keeping money close to home now in general. I would avoid most state schools if you can’t afford them. The UCs are not giving money to OOS students this year so you are left with high reaches and NYU which is known for not meeting most people’s need.

Your EFC and how much you can afford would be critical info in helping you choose realistic schools at this stage.

SUNY Geneseo in New York is one of them. The school attracts top students (Avg. SAT 1340, GPA 94), professors are excellent, the campus is beautiful with strong acadmic programs.

And, I won’t be able to pay for the expense of the UCs if no financial aid or scholarships are given.

The UC’s don’t give FA to OOS kids, so those apps were likely a waste. Frankly, nearly all OOS publics won’t give you FA (exception UVA and maybe one other). Some OOS publics might give you merit money.

You’re ACT is MUCH higher than your SAT, but that’s OK! Schools will use the ACT.

*However, I would rather build a list of more safe/middle schools first and then narrow it based on financial need.
*

It’s too late in the app season to be using that strategy (altho I know some students on this board are stubbornly aand naively doing this right now ). If this was a year ago or last summer, it would be different. Since money is an issue, you need to consider that limiting parameter when creating your list. If I needed to find housing in a timely manner, I wouldn’t just gather up a list of fabulous homes and then figure out if I could afford any of them - when search time is so limited now. Hmom5 is right; using that strategy now will likely severly limit your end results.

However, since you’re from Idaho, you might get into an ivy since not too many apply from your state and your ranking is excellent.

I think you need to find out which safety schools will give you lots of merit, since many safeties can’t meet need thru FA.

Tulane, Syracuse, Temple (has Division I male gymnastics). Also, although this might seem a little strange, I think Brandeis might be very interested in an Idaho kid with excellent stats. If you are willing to take a look at some smaller schools, Skidmore and Connecticut College would probably be safe for you.

thanks everyone for the help! I completely understand the financial problem, so I guess it would be best to suggest schools that are safeties for my stats, but will give me good aid whether it be merit or not. My parents make in the bracket of 60 to 70k if that helps at all.

I’m not really keen on staying close to home at all. Although Gonzaga is a great school, it is only about 30 minutes from my house so it isn’t a far stretch. I wouldn’t ever want to live in Spokane, WA.
