Need some urgent advice on essay idea

I was going through some ideas for my common app essay and I figured that it might be pretty worthwhile writing an essay about video games. I was not just your average video game immersed kid. I actually took my passion for video games into something else. I want to talk about my experience owning and managing a Minecraft server. For those of you that don’t know, a server basically means multiplayer. It was not just a one month thing. I actually put a lot of work into it and managed to make the server reach in the top 200 of Minecraft servers in the world. This Minecraft server was created and managed by me for about 3 years so when I was 12-15 years old. I was thinking of writing about how managing this server mirrors that of a small business.

For example, some of the skills that I learnt from managing the server were quite beneficial. Some skills such as collaboration were attained as I had to work with server administrators that I appointed and the general server community. I effectively learnt time management, financial responsibility (I opened a server shop, which allowed players to purchase items with real, hard cash), technical skills such as programming websites and programs, and essentially business creativity to ensure your server remained better than others.

However, I am not sure whether talking about video games is really a good topic for the common app essay. I mean it really sounds cheesy to talk about owning a video game server, but I do think creating and maintaining a successful Minecraft server at the age of 12 is a really unique thing to bring onto the table.

Its definitely unique but you don’t do it anymore so it might be difficult to bring the story into the present. You could definitely make it work but reading through your post, my initial reaction wasn’t enthusiastic-- and I’m a video game kid around your age. Imagine an admissions officer years older than us reading it…

Like I said, it’s a viable topic. Just try to bring it to the present by elaborating on its effects on you.

Because if you don’t then it’s essentially a ‘who cares?’ moment for the reader. Who cares what you did at 12?

At the end of the day, the impression that adcoms will get from your essay is that you spend alot of time in your room managing a “minecraft server.” Now, if that inspired you to start your own business or show commitment to a particular business, then that’s a more interesting story. If your essay just talks about your time playing minecraft, then it seems too juvenile.

Of course, just take my advice with a grain of salt as I’ve never played this game before!
